Jamie and Christy on the field before a Maryland Football game

Terrapin Club

Terrapin Club Member Spotlight: Jamie and Christy Wu

How did you first get involved with the Terrapin Club?
Jamie: I got involved with the Terrapin Club because I played football and ran track at Maryland. As a student-athlete I always understood where the scholarship came from. So, when I graduated, I wanted to give back, and I was able to start at a small level. I knew that I needed to give back since I was there for 5 years and graduated with no debt.

Christy: I got involved with the Terrapin Club because I felt it was a great way to stay involved with the University. I also really like that Terrapin Club touches all aspects of the athletics department.
What motivates you to give so generously?
Jamie and Christy: We try to give back as much as possible. We are not like some of the more established boosters, but we give what we can to help the program.
Do you have a message you would like to share with other donors and fans?
Jamie and Christy: We wish there were more fans and alums that gave to the athletics department. It is misunderstood that everything like scholarships are paid for, but that is not the case. We are not a Michigan or Ohio State from a financial standpoint, so we really need support from all our fans. We have a huge fanbase that needs to give back. We need to engrain in the student-athletes that the Terrapin Club is there for them. Giving back to support future generations is something that everyone should take part in.
Do you have an anecdote about Maryland Athletics or the Terrapin Club that you would share?
Christy: The 2017 football game at Texas was special. The game itself was great, and we made so many unforgettable memories that weekend in Austin. We really felt the Maryland Athletics family and community that weekend.

Jamie: For me, it's the fact that we got engaged right after the 2002 Peach Bowl. I told some of my friends, 'If Maryland wins, I'll propose tonight.' We went on to win, then at the stroke of midnight I proposed to Christy in front of everyone. We told Coach Friedgen thank you afterwards. (note: I wasn't on the team then. We graduated in 2000).
Who is on your Mount Rushmore of Maryland Athletics
Jamie and Christy: Dick Edell, Gary Williams, Lamont Jordan, and Johnny Holiday
What do you hope Maryland Athletics will achieve this year?
Jamie: We hope that the Terps can continue the football momentum. Coach Locksley has had his ups and downs, and we think that the tides are finally turning. Hopefully, the football team can stay healthy and continue to compete at a high level.

For men's basketball we hope the program continues to build. We hope the other sports continue to be competitive in conference play. We know that Maryland can be great across the board.
If you could go back in time and witness one Terps game live (in any sport), what would it be and why?
Christy: I'd love to be there live for the 2002 men's basketball national championship game or the 2006 women's basketball national championship game. The men's game wasn't the best, but watching Gary and Juan cut down the nets was amazing.  The women's win was a thriller.

Jamie: I'd love to relive the Texas game in 2015. The Texas fans were hospitable, the stadium was beautiful, and it was a great game to watch. If I could recreate that whole weekend I would.
What is the first Maryland game you ever went to?
Christy: I grew up in Central, Pennsylvania and we moved down here to Maryland when I was in middle school. My first game was Maryland vs. Penn State at Memorial Stadium in Baltimore. My family was unsure if we would root for the Nittany Lions or the Terrapins, so I stayed neutral. Penn State ended up beating Maryland pretty handedly"

Jamie: "It was a recruiting trip. I was almost set to go to Tennessee, but the coach recruiting me was leaving for Memphis and wanted me to go there and I was not interested. A Maryland coach eventually called and wanted me, so I agreed to come out for a visit. It was the end of January in 1995, and Maryland played Duke in Cole Field House. I remember Joe Smith blocked a shot to win the game and Cole went bonkers! To me, that was the pinnacle college experience
What do you want to see Maryland Athletics achieve moving forward?
Christy: The Olympic sports are killing it and Maryland does not get the respect they deserve. I hope to see the other sports get over the hump and get to that level, so we can dominate the Big Ten across the board"

Jamie: I would like to see football be competitive every year. I'd like to see us go 8-4 to 9-3 consistently and compete for a Big Ten Championship every once in awhile. I hope to see the Terps play in the Rose Bowl in my lifetime.
What makes Maryland Athletics so special?
Jamie and Christy: For us it's a couple of things; the fact that we are not heavy in one sport. We have had so much continued success in Olympic sports, and with that success legacies have been passed down with legendary coaches like Sasho, Kathy, Missy, and others.

What Gary did with the basketball program was special. I believe that what Coach Locks is building will be special as well.

We also greatly value our fellow diehard Maryland fans. In the DMV we have so much competition in entertainment, especially in sports. Because of that, those who mainly back the Terps are special. We have a tight knit group of fans who support the Terps vocally no matter what.
