Smith Named Big Ten Wrestler of the Week

ROSEMONT, Ill. -- Redshirt junior Jaron Smith was named the Big Ten Wrestler of the Week, as announced by the conference offices Tuesday. Smith is the third-ever Terrapin to receive the honor and the first Maryland wrestler to do so this season. Smith joins Youssif Hemida and Patrick Gerish as the lone Terps to receive the honors.

Smith knocked off #16 Lucas Davison of Northwestern in thrilling fashion, pinning the redshirt freshman in the first period (2:18). Davison was also ranked #9 in FloWrestling's poll and #10 in the latest NCAA Division I Coaches' Rankings. The fall was Smith's second over a ranked wrestler on the season (pinned #14 Jordan Pagano, Rutgers in 0:52 on 12/7) and third total, all pins coming in the first period. Smith improves to 10-7 on the season, now leads the team with four Big Ten dual wins, and ranks second on the team with six dual wins.

Smith vaults to #23 in the latest FloWrestling rankings and looks to improve upon his NCAA Championship resume with duals coming up vs. George Mason (Feb. 21) and Rider (Feb. 22).
