Terrapin Club Member Spotlight: Steve Rosenthal

How did you first get involved with the Terrapin Club?
Steve: I realized that I wanted to join the Terrapin Club during my years as a resident.  After being away from the Maryland area for graduate school and residency training I had the opportunity to watch the Maryland Georgetown basketball game in November of 1993 which was the first game for Joe Smith and Keith Booth. After that day I reached out and joined the Terrapin Club and have been a member ever since.
What motivates you to give so generously?
Steve: I have been fortunate enough to have had the support of my family and have been fortunate to be able to support my children through their education.  Having the flexibility that I did, due to this support, enabled me to follow my passions and pursue a career of my dreams. I was able to see that those opportunities were available to my children.  Now that they have followed their dreams I hope that I can help support others to follow their educational passions.
Do you have a message you would like to share with other donors and fans?
Steve: Support of the university comes in many ways including attending the games, financially supporting the institution, mentoring students but most of all wearing the red, black and gold proudly and representing our school within our communities with a respectful passion.
Do you have an anecdote about Maryland Athletics or the Terrapin Club that you would share?
Steve: I have so many memories of Maryland Athletics, the Final Fours in basketball, being honored as the donor of the week, the games against number one ranked teams, traveling to away games at Michigan and Penn State, tailgating, but two of the most memorable nights was the night of my 40th birthday going to the Maryland vs. Florida State Football game with my son and great friends to see the Terps take down the Noles or in 2002 when we beat then number 1 Duke at Cole Field House during the championship year.
Who is on your Mount Rushmore of Maryland Athletics
Steve: Len Bias, Juan Dixon, Boomer Esiason, Gary Williams, Left Driesell, Steve Blake, Melo Trimble, EJ Henderson, Lamont Jordan, Torrey Smith, Anthony Cowan and Richard Shure.
What do you hope Maryland Athletics will achieve this year?
Steve: The safety and health of all athletes and staff, competitiveness through hard work, well rounded education and integrity. Then, conference championships and eventually national championships as long as the initial goals are achieved.
If you could go back in time and witness one Terps game live (in any sport), what would it be and why?
Steve: The game I would like to re-attend would be the home game between Maryland and North Carolina in the Len Bias and Michael Jordan era, 1984. I was there but did not, at the time, realize what a special impact these two players, as well as the others on the court, would make in the future.
What is the first Maryland game you ever went to?
Steve: Football - Maryland vs. NC State in 1982 - the first game at home as a freshman
What do you want to see Maryland Athletics achieve moving forward?
Steve: A recognized and respected program for our successes on and off the field which will then garner the support of the local and national community building a supportive network through the world for not only Maryland athletes but all University of Maryland students.
What makes Maryland Athletics so special?
Steve: What makes Maryland Athletics special is the opportunity to thrive in many sports and the ability of these students to have access to the educational and employment opportunities that are available through the University of Maryland.
