Terrapin Club

Terrapin Club Member Spotlight: Dale Dickerhoof

How did you first get involved with the Terrapin Club?
Dale: First significant involvement with the Club was when I realized how the University had contributed to my professional success and wanted to give back as best I could.
What motivates you to give so generously?
Dale: I give because I can, primarily, but believe all should share successes when possible.  I do like to see tangible results, and that is usually the case. My hope is my donation to the lacrosse and field hockey stadium project will facilitate that build... and I will live long enough to see it.
Do you have a message you would like to share with other donors and fans?
Dale: To all... Do not forget what our University gave YOU. All of us were beneficiaries of others' largesse in some way. Give back if you can. To the fans... Appreciate the efforts of all sports team participants.  I guarantee all work hard on and off the field to represent the University of Maryland.
Do you have an anecdote about Maryland Athletics or the Terrapin Club that you would share?
Dale: My greatest personal memory was being in Anaheim, CA, when the men's basketball team beat Stanford to earn their first Final Four. Was in the company of great friends and other serious Terp supporters; many, many hugs were shared and tears flowed with true joy. It was truly an unforgettable experience.
Who is on your Mount Rushmore of Maryland Athletics
Dale: My personal Terp 'Mount Rushmore' is easy. Jen Adams and Taylor Cummings are surely there as the two greatest women's lacrosse players in the history of that sport... the worldwide history of that sport. Not only were they great players...they were great teammates who led and inspired their fellow Terps.    (Let's not forget...Women's Lacrosse is by far the most successful Terrapin team in the history of UMD.)

Gary Williams and Walt Williams are on the mountain next to Jen and Taylor. Many, including me, believe Gary 'saved' our University when he came back to College Park. Truly. And Walt Williams stayed to play for Coach Williams.  What they started has led to huuuuuuuge successes that continue to this day.
What do you hope Maryland Athletics will achieve this year?
Dale: Maryland teams should play this year... and must play this year. Championships will follow if they do.
If you could go back in time and witness one Terps game live (in any sport), what would it be and why?
Dale: This is easy! A professional commitment prevented me from being in Atlanta for the 2002 men's basketball National Championship. Watching that game on a small T.V. was not quite the same as being there.
What is the first Maryland game you ever went to?
Dale: My first Terp game was likely a football game in my undergraduate days.
What do you want to see Maryland Athletics achieve moving forward?
Dale: I want to see Maryland teams PLAY and play well. I want to see and be part of CHAMPIONSHIPS, but what pleases me most is seeing former Terrapin athletes successes after their campus days. I personally know former players who are physicians, teachers, coaches, entrepreneurs, business leaders, professional athletes, and community leaders. Their successes after their playing days makes me proud to be a Terp.
What makes Maryland Athletics so special?
Dale: All of the above is what makes it so special. Championships, other game day successes, memories, and real life 'WINS' are what make University of Maryland Athletics so special.
