Chapel Hill, NC - The Maryland women's golf team finished in 13th at the Ruth Chris Tar Invitational at UNC Finley Golf Course. During the final round of play, the Terrapins posted the lowest team score in the field 285 (-3) beating several top 30 ranked programs in the nation like: #11 Wake Forest, #12 Duke, #13 Alabama, #30 Virginia Tech among others. Maria Vittoria Corbi lead the way for the squad finishing in a two-way tie for 14th (-3) -- (71-71-71).
"For Corbi to put up three rounds under par, a first for her in the Maryland career is great to see," said head coach Kelly Hovland.
The Collective
"It was an awesome day, we're moving in the right direction as a team," said coach Hovland. "To beat some top teams in the nation coming down the stretch duing the final round despite not winning show a lot of progress. I'm excited, we have a lot good things to take away."
Steady Progress
-Sophomore Patricie Mackova finished in five-way tie for 16th (-2) -- (72-73-69)
-Freshman Panassaya Somchit finished in a six-way tie for 29th (+1) -- (76-72-69)
-Junior Angela Garvin finished in a solo 88th (+16) -- (80-75-77)
-Sopohmore Karla Elena Vázquez Setzer finished in a two-way for 90th (+20) -- (83-77-76)
From the Coaches Eye - Hovland's Analysis
On Patricie: "Soild rounds, all together this week. She strung together lots of birdies under pressure as well as had some great putting. To have that skill as a young sophomore is going to great down the line."
On Panasaya: "Every round she plays is more experience under her belt. She's one of our elite players. She knows how to put herself in position to score and as an added bonus she's long off the tee."
Looking Forward
"We just have to sharpen up our team golf, said Hovland. "We don't have much of a break. We are headed straight into another competitive tournament against some in conference Big Ten opponents and top-ranked programs in the country like we saw this week. Luckily our next tournament is in the same state so we make some improvements to perform next week"
