COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The University of Maryland football team held its annual team awards ceremony on Sunday night at The Hotel in College Park. Members of the team, staff and program supporters enjoyed an evening of socializing and recognizing the accomplishments of the 2021 Terrapins football team.
"I appreciate the type of effort that each and everyone one of these guys gave this season," said Maryland Head Coach Michael Locksley. "Everyone did their part to put us in this position to take the next step as a program. We all wanted more for ourselves, but we learned going forward how to make more possible. I'm excited to see where we go from here. I can wholeheartedly say that our best is ahead."
Among the big award winners for the night was redshirt sophomore quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa. The record-setting quarterback was chosen as the Most Valuable Player on the team, the Offensive Player of the Year and named one of four year-end team captains.
Joining Tagovailoa as team captains, which was voted on by the players, was graduate defensive lineman Sam Okuayinonu and senior wide receivers Brian Cobbs and Dontay Demus Jr. Okuayinonu was also selected as the Defensive Player of the Year for the Terps.
The second recipient of the Jordan McNair Memorial Award was senior tight end Chigoziem Okonkwo. Jordan's parents, Marty McNair and Tonya Wilson, were on hand to deliver the award, which is given to the player who reflects the spirit of Jordan by showing great professionalism athletically and academically, dedication to his team, strength in the face of immense adversity, as well as courage and conviction to do the right thing.
