Tagovailoa Named Finalist For Polynesian College Football Player of the Year

HONOLULU, HI. -- Maryland redshirt sophomore quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa was announced as one of seven finalists for the Polynesian College Football Player of the Year Award on Thursday by the Polynesian Football Hall of Fame. The award is presented annually to the most outstanding college football player of Polynesian ancestry that epitomizes great ability and integrity.
Tagovailoa is Maryland's first ever finalist for the Polynesian College Football Player of the Year. The Ewa Beach, Hawaii native was a 2019 Polynesian Bowl All-Star as a senior in high school.
The redshirt sophomore signal caller had one of the best seasons ever by a Maryland quarterback in his second season as a Terp. Tagovailoa set program records for passing yards (3,595), completions (308) and 300-yard passing games (seven), while standing top-25 in the country and top-three in the Big Ten in completion percentage (68.4%), completions per game (25.67), passing touchdowns (24) and total offense (303.3). Now a two-time All-Big Ten selection, Tagovailoa is the leader of a Maryland offense that is only 138 yards away from setting the program record for most passing yards in a season (3,823 in 1993).
The other 2021 finalists are Jayden De Laura (Washington State), Daniel Faalele (Minnesota), Haskell Garrett (Ohio State), Noah Sewell (Oregon), Mike Tafua (Utah), and Jaylen Warren (Oklahoma State). Tagovailoa is one of two quarterbacks up for the award (De Laura) and one of three players from the Big Ten (Faalele & Garrett).
The winner of the Polynesian College Football Player of the Year Award will be announced on December 22, 2021. The formal presentation of the Award will be held at the 2022 Polynesian Football Hall of Fame Celebration Dinner (January 21, 2022), along with being recognized during the 2022 Polynesian Bowl (January 22, 2022).
Tagovailoa's older brother and Miami Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa, is a two-time recipient of this award, winning in both 2018 & 2019 while at Alabama. Last year the award went to current San Francisco 49ers safety Talanoa Hufanga (USC) and current New York Jets QB Zach Wilson (BYU).
