Bill and friends at a Maryland Football Tailgate

Terrapin Club

Terrapin Club Member Spotlight: Bill Van Dyke

How did you first get involved with the Terrapin Club?
Bill: I had already been going to football and basketball games for 8 or 9 years. My girlfriend at the time (now wife) was a fanatical fan as well who had been to two bowl games before we'd even met. After she graduated she got a job at a big company that was doing matching gifts at $2 for $1. Back then, if you donated $600 you got two tickets for football and two tickets for basketball, so we were able to donate $200 and with the match get two tickets for each sport, so it made all the sense in the world to start giving.
What motivates you to give so generously?
Bill: Going to football and basketball games is the biggest part of our social life, so donating is a no-brainer. I've been to every home football game since 1971, coming up on 50 years.
Do you have a message you would like to share with other donors and fans?
Bill: Come on out to our tailgate in Lot 1 sometime and say hi, we've been having them since 1979!
Do you have an anecdote about Maryland Athletics or the Terrapin Club that you would share?
Bill: One of my greatest thrills was, after college, playing AAU basketball with Jim O'Brien, Bob Bodell, and Mo Howard. All were great players on some of Lefty Driesell's best teams in the early 70's. It couldn't have been more fun playing with them. We won the Maryland state title that year of course.
Who is on your Mount Rushmore of Maryland Athletics
Bill: Jim Kehoe, Lefty Driesell, Gary Williams, Bob Bodell
What do you hope Maryland Athletics will achieve this year?
Bill: First of all I hope fans will be able to come to football and basketball games next school year. But I would like to see football in a bowl game and basketball to get back into the Sweet 16.
If you could go back in time and witness one Terps game live (in any sport), what would it be and why?
Bill: The 1951 Sugar Bowl when Maryland defeated #1 Tennessee to cap of an undefeated season.
What is the first Maryland game you ever went to?
Bill: It was Maryland vs. Air Force Football game in 1963. Dick Shiner was the Maryland quarterback and led a comeback victory with two touchdown passes in the second half.
What do you want to see Maryland Athletics achieve moving forward?
Bill: Most of my focus is on Football and Men's basketball, so I would like to see consistent bowl games and sweet 16 appearances.

What makes Maryland Athletics so special?
Bill: I have a saying that all of my friends know "The Mighty Terps of Maryland". It's been such a big part of my life from that first game. I started going to Maryland Basketball games when I was in high school at Parkdale, which was also Lefty's first year. It's been such a big part of my life for so long and is such a huge part of our social life.
