Scott and his family before a Maryland Football game

Terrapin Club

Terrapin Club Member Spotlight: Scott Weitz

How did you first get involved with the Terrapin Club?
Scott: I joined the Terrapin Club as soon as I graduated, and I purchased both football and basketball season tickets right away.  There is nothing like being at a Maryland game, in the stands, cheering with other Maryland fans.   Now I am on the Board of Directors and I love being a part of the Terrapin Club even more.

What motivates you to give so generously?
Scott: Maryland has given me and my family so many special memories that no matter how much of my time I volunteer and no matter how much money I donate, it would never be enough to repay Maryland for what it has given to me and my family.
What would you say to someone who is on the fence about joining the Terrapin Club?
Scott: If you are a Maryland fan, then you need to be a Terrapin Club member.  There has never been a better time to become a Terrapin Club member.  The new Back Stage Pass experiences will create memories for you and your family that you won't be able to get anywhere else.  Facility tours, player and coaches' experiences, be a recruit for a day, movies on the football field, Terrapin Club Plus, the new Restaurant Discount Program and so much more.  For every dollar the Terrapin Club raises, and uses 100% to fund athletic scholarships, that's another dollar the athletic department can free up to build new facilities and do what needs to be done to help our student athletes win championships.
Do you have a message for current Terrapin Club donors?
Scott: Thank you for your support!  The new benefits that the Terrapin Club are beginning to offer, are unrivaled anywhere in the country, but we still need your help.   If everyone could get just one new person to join, we could reach our goal of having 10,000 members.
Do you have an anecdote about Maryland Athletics or the Terrapin Club that you would share?
Scott: One of my favorite Maryland Memories was at the Michigan State basketball game last year.  I had tickets with three friends right behind the Maryland bench.  We were rooting very loudly for Maryland, and the Michigan State students didn't take kindly to us yelling and whistling during their free throws.  It got to the point that the whole student section was pointing, and screaming at us and let's just say they were very unhappy with us.  At the end of the game, Anthony Cowan hit two big threes to take the lead.  Right after he made the second one, it was kind of quiet in the stadium because Michigan State was in disbelief, and I yelled loudly to Anthony on the court, "Hey Anthony!", and he turned around and looked at me, and I said "They can't guard you Anthony!" and he looked back at me, with a giant smile, and my friends and the whole Maryland bench heard what I said and saw how Anthony responded and they all started screaming and high fiving each other.  It was amazing!

What do you hope Maryland Athletics will achieve this year?
Scott: I hope the Maryland men can make a deep run in the NCAA tournament, the women can win the National Championship and I hope the football team will make a high-level bowl game this year.
If you could go back in time and witness one Terps game live (in any sport), what would it be and why?
Scott: I would go back and see Len Bias's last game.  I wasn't at Maryland yet, but I think Len was an amazing basketball player and I would have loved to see him play his last game live.  He was an amazing athlete, ahead of his time and I think he could have been one of the greatest players, ever, in the NBA.  I still makes me sad to think about him and what could have been.  Len is one of the reasons I wanted to go to the University of Maryland.

What is the first Maryland game you ever went to?
Scott: I don't remember my first game, but one of my favorites was the game that Walt Williams returned to the team, after he broke his leg and was out 6 weeks.  Walt didn't start the game, and later came into the game to loud cheers and then, almost right away, he hit a long three pointer, and the stadium went crazy!  I never heard it so loud at Cole.  There have been many great games and memories at Maryland, but since Walt is one of my favorite Maryland players of all time, that memory stands out to me and still gives me chills when I think about it.
What do you want to see Maryland Athletics achieve moving forward?
Scott: I would love to see the Terrapin Club fully fund all athletic scholarships.  I want us to get a new football scoreboard.  I want us to have a new state-of-the-art basketball practice facility, and I want all of our sports to have the facilities they need to recruit the best and the brightest to help win national championships and enhance the experience of every student athlete.  I would also like to see another Men's basketball and football national championship.

What makes Maryland Athletics so special?
Scott: What makes Maryland special to me are the traditions, the memories, the road trips, the tailgates, the friendships, the excitement, the passion, the family feeling and the fun.  I urge anyone who hasn't taken advantage of everything Maryland and Maryland Athletics has to offer, to do so this Fall.  I promise you, that you, your family and friends will create memories that will last a lifetime.  And when it's all said and done, memories are what we live for.  Maryland has plenty of them waiting for you to grab.  Go Terps and I hope to be able to see everyone tailgating at Maryland in the Fall!
