Reicin Awarded NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship

University of Maryland senior Julia Reicin of the cross country and track and field programs has been awarded the prestigious NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship for her achievements in the classroom and as a runner.
The Scholarship is awarded to student-athletes who excel academically and athletically. Reicin was nominated by the University of Maryland for her commitment to athletics, academics, leadership and community involvement.
Reicin is a psychology and geographic information science double major and will be graduating this spring. During her time at Maryland, the Potomac, Md., native has earned Academic All-Big Ten honors competing in all three running seasons.
"I'm planning to get a masters in public policy and the scholarship will definitely jumpstart my masters and hopefully launch me into my career," said Reicin.
Over the past four years, Reicin has held many leadership roles within the athletic department. During the 2020-21 academic year, she has been serving as the Director of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) whose mission is to enhance the student-athlete experience by promoting student-athlete welfare and enhancing the student-athlete voice.
"As SAAC Director I've gotten the opportunity to have an impact and act as the voice of student athletes across the board," she said.
Reicin also worked as a Fellow for Team IMPACT, one of the charities that the University of Maryland Athletics Department partnered with this past fall. Team IMPACT's goal is to connect children with chronic illnesses with athletic teams, forming lifelong bonds and life changing outcomes.
"Team IMPACT has been a really cool experience for me. I got involved when I was a sophomore and got the opportunity to grow the program," said Reicin. "It was really small when I started and now half of the teams on campus are partnered."
Reicin also volunteered to be part of the VoTERP initiative during the election this past fall and is involved in the Big Ten SAAC and the University of Maryland Athletic Council.
"I think Maryland athletics has provided an element of support and special opportunities that as a normal student I never would have expected," said Reicin "They have been able to turn me from a high schooler to an adult who will be very capable going into the workforce and the future."
Reicin has many different career interests, but is leaning towards working for the government in some sort of public service after she earns her graduate degree.
"The opportunities I have received as a student athlete, especially as SAAC Director, have taught me skills I would have never expected to get as an undergrad," said Reicin. "I'm really appreciative of this scholarship and really appreciative of everything that Maryland has done to support me in all of the different endeavors I've been a part of."
