Terrapin Club Member Spotlight: Jeff Smith

How did you first get involved with the Terrapin Club?
Jeff: When we were living in Boston, the company I worked for had a matching gifts program. We had been giving to other charities and I decided to pick up the Terp Club. A few years later, my employer decided that "athletic scholarship funds" were no longer eligible for the match, which led to some spirited discussions between the Terp Club staff and my employer. I stayed the course however.
What motivates you to give so generously?
Jeff: I like the feeling of helping to pay the scholarship bill since the state doesn't provide any help, and generally maintaining a connection to the campus and College Park. The benefits are very generous and the membership consists of a bunch of great folks.
Do you have a message for current Terrapin Club donors?
Jeff: For the donors, support at whatever Terp Club level you feel comfortable with.  You're helping kids fulfill their dreams of playing D-1 college athletics and getting to meet some great people at the same time. For the fans, keep your passion and be as positive as possible.  We all complain about something from time to time, but all of our teams are full of good coaches and kids and deserve our positive support.
Do you have an anecdote about Maryland Athletics or the Terrapin Club that you would share?
Jeff: Too many anecdotes to share, but incredibly fun times in Maui, the old football road game bus trips, all of the basketball regional and Final Four trips, tailgates at Byrd, pre-games at Bentley's and all of camaraderie that comes with those memories.
Who is on your Mount Rushmore of Maryland Athletics
Jeff: Lenny, Gary, Boomer, Juan
What do you hope Maryland Athletics will achieve this year?
Jeff: I hope for max attendance for every team at all venues and games so the kids can get the support they deserve.
If you could go back in time and witness one Terps game live (in any sport), what would it be and why?
Jeff: Game I attended:  Beating Stanford in Anaheim to make our first Final Four—close call with beating Indiana to win the Natty, but the feeling after that Stanford game was incredible. Game I didn't attend:  1974 ACC Championship Game-Two legendary teams.
What is the first Maryland game you ever went to?
Jeff: September 8, 1979 football vs Villanova.
What do you want to see Maryland Athletics achieve moving forward?
Jeff: Maintain consistent quality programs across all sports in the face of pandemic recovery and expand the donor base as much as possible.
What makes Maryland Athletics so special?
Jeff: The quality of all the programs across revenue and non-revenue sports and the way that the athletes are prepared for life after college.
