Terrapin Club Member Spotlight: Doug Mangum

What motivates you to give so generously?
Doug: I'm motivated to give because of my love of sports and the power that it can provide each participant'sĀ esteem and confidence in other areas of development.Ā  The Terps are my local team growing up just 5 minutes away in Greenbelt, Md.
Do you have a message for current Terrapin Club donors and fans?
Doug: Support our flagship university as a sense of pride as a resident of the great state of Maryland. Ā Think of its athletes as your own sons and daughters and come out to cheer them on.Ā
Do you have an anecdote about Maryland Athletics or the Terrapin Club that you would share?
Doug: One memory sticks out during the 2005 ACC tourney game vs. N.C.Ā State.Ā  I'm with my 17 year old son and we are behind by double digits and the entire Maryland section begins to chant "Let's Go Maryland", for what seemed like 10 minutes straight as we made up the deficit and rallied on to victory.Ā  Next day we beat Duke and brought home the trophy!
Who is on your Mount Rushmore of Maryland Athletics
Doug: If I'm gonna select a Mt. Rushmore I'll go with all coaches – Driesell, Williams, Sasho, and Brenda Frese.Ā
What is the most memorable Maryland game you've attended?
Doug: National Title game in Atlanta, Ga in 2002. I was able to go to all sixĀ games and enjoy the entire journey of victories.
If you could go back in time and witness one Terps game live (in any sport), what would it be and why?
Doug: I'd actually want to go to the 1984 ACC tournament and watch us win all threeĀ games as Len Bias breaks out to lead our Terps!
What is the first Maryland game you ever went to?
Doug: Maryland vs. Syracuse 1974 (I think). 38-0. Bob Avellini and Ben Kinard QBd and Louis Carter was the RB.Ā  I was 12 going on 13.Ā  First basketball game was Grad/Senior day for Tom McMillen and Len Elmore, I'm sure there were others...
What do you want to see Maryland Athletics achieve moving forward?
Doug: Packed stadiums and arenas and more championships while graduating our athletes.
What makes Maryland Athletics so special?
Doug: The players first and the fans second.Ā  I've made many a friend through the TerrapinĀ Club as well as met and spoke with great representatives/players/coaches and parents of players.Ā  Traditions like Gymkana and the flag drops, Maryland Day, Flash Mobs, the list goes on and on.Ā
