Maryland Finishes Strong Round Two at NCAA Championships

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – The 20th-ranked Maryland women's golf team improved its score by nine strokes in the second round of the NCAA Championships Saturday at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz.
As a team, the Terrapins picked up 12 birdies Saturday, including seven on their first nine holes before the wind picked up on the course. As a team, Maryland earned a score of 297 Saturday, improving its score from 306 in the first round Friday. The Terrapins currently sit at 20th in the 24-team field. They are just three strokes behind No. 1 South Carolina and No. 23 Michigan, who are tied for 14th. After Sunday's third round, the top 15 teams in the field advance to a final round of stroke play Monday.
After shooting an 80 in the first round Friday, sophomore Maria Vittoria Corbi bounced back to lead the Terrapins with her two-under score of 70 Saturday. She is +6 so far in the event with a 150 (80-70). Corbi birdied the fourth, 14th and 17th holes. She parred 14 holes and only picked up one bogey.
Senior Virunpat Olankitkunchai went even Saturday and also picked up three birdies. She improved her score from the first round by seven strokes for a total score of 151 (79-72), which is +7.
Senior Xiaolin Tian shot a 76 Saturday and led the Terrapins with five birdies. She is tied for 53rd in the field with her +5 total score of 149 (76-73).
Freshman Patricie Mackova earned a 79 in Saturday's second round after parring her final seven holes. She +11 so far with a score of 155 (76-79).
Senior Laura Van Respaille shot an 82 Saturday and owns an overall score of 160.
The Terrapins will tee off in the third round of the NCAA Championships Sunday at 3:30 p.m. ET. Live scoring will be available here.
This is the Terps' first appearance in program history as a team in the NCAA Championships.
