SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – The Maryland women's golf team capped off its first team appearance in NCAA Championships Sunday in the third round at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz.
As a team, the Terrapins picked up 10 birdies Sunday, but that wasn't enough for them to move into the top 15 teams in the field to advance. They finished tied with Virginia Tech for 21st in the standings. The Terps were +15 overall in Sunday's final round and finished +42 overall with a score of 906 (306-297-303).
Maryland picked up six birdies on the front nine, moving into a tie for the 15th spot. The Terrapins couldn't sustain the momentum as they closed the back nine.
"Even though we wanted to play better the last few rounds, I am so proud of how far our team came this season," Big Ten Coach of the Year Diana Cantu said. "All of our ladies were outstanding on and off the course the entire year. They did everything we asked of them and more. The sacrifices they made to stay healthy in order to compete in a pandemic can't go unnoticed. Our entire team stayed healthy all season long. Apart from their talent, they all really came together, supported one another, and truly enjoyed competing as a team this season. This group of ladies is special. They are fun to coach and make me love what I do.
"We had a vision and goal in mind at the start of the season and that was competing in the national championships. Being able to watch them accomplish that was priceless. This season is leaving us with so many unforgettable memories. It's time to get to work so that we can be back next year!"
Senior Xiaolin Tian led the way for Maryland, finishing +8 overall. She shot a 75 Sunday with three birdies to earn an overall score of 224 (73-76-75). Tian tied for 59th in the individual standings.
Sophomore Maria Vittoria Corbi finished nine strokes over total on the weekend. She also shot a 75 Sunday to finish with a score of 225 (80-70-75), which was +9 and tied her for 70th. Corbi also picked up three birdies in Sunday's final round.
Senior Virunpat Olankitkunchai shot a 75 Sunday to go +3 on the day. She finished with s 226 (79-72-75), which was +10 on the weekend.
Freshman Patricie Mackova earned a score of 79 in the final round Sunday to finish the event with a score of 234 (76-79-79), which was +18 overall. Senior Laura Van Respaille shot a 238 overall (78-82-78).
This group of Terrapins made history for the program, being the first group to advance to the NCAA Championships as a team. They also earned the highest ranking in school history, No. 14 earlier this season.
