Okonkwo Named to John Mackey Award Watch List

NEW YORK, N.Y. – University of Maryland senior tight end Chigoziem Okonkwo has been selected to the John Mackey Award Watch List, it was announced on Friday. It marks the second consecutive season that Okonkwo has been recognized on the preseason watch list.
The Mackey Award is given annually to the most outstanding collegiate tight end. The award is named after NFL Hall of Fame member John Mackey.
Okonkwo, who missed last season for medical reasons, has appeared in 24 games and scored six touchdowns since his arrival in College Park in 2018. He ranked second on the team in receptions (19) and third in receiving yards (201) during his sophomore campaign in 2019.
A Powder Springs, Georgia native, Okonkwo made an immediate impact as a freshman in 2018. He rushed three times for 72 yards with three touchdowns, while also catching six balls for 69 yards and one touchdown.
