TERRAPINS FINISH IN EIGHTH IN KNOXVILLE

Knoxville, TN - The Maryland women's golf team finished eighth at the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship. After three rounds, the Terps picked up their first team top-ten of the season. Both Patricie Mackova (76-70-67) and Karla Elena Vázquez Setzer (73-68-73) placed eighth and ninth, respectively.
"This is momentum in the right direction," said head coach Kelly Hovland. "All underclassmen led the way."
The Other Factor
The tournament was played in the rain. "I would say about 33 of 36 holes played on day one were in a heavy downpour," said Hovland. "We showed a lot of resilience in tough conditions and had solid rounds on the difficult course." The start of round three was pushed back by 30 minutes due to heavy rain showers. Due to no lighting in the area, play was never suspended.
Just The Beginning
-Freshman Panassaya Somchit finished in a six-way tie for 20th (74-75-72)
-Junior Angela Garvin finished in a five-way tie for 26th (73-72-73)
-Junior Maria Vittoria Corbi finished in a three-way tie for 63th (75-76-75)
-Senior Elena Verticchio finished 81st (82-75-75)
"From the Coaches Eye" - Hovland's Analysis
Patricie - "One of the best rounds I've seen her play as a Terp."
Karla - "She plays with all her heart. She has six collegiate rounds under her belt, but she plays like a veteran."
Angela - "All of her practice and training is paying off after not playing in a competitive environment since fall 2019. It will come into play in the latter half of the season when playing against Big Ten schools and in championships."
On Top-Ten Finish - "It's still not where we want to be yet, but we are meeting small goals. So, it's a big step forward."
Looking Forward
"We're headed to a championship course with a lot of history. I'm excited to put the team up against some top 25 programs in the country as well as some Big Ten competitors," said Hovland.
