ROSEMONT, IL – Freshman Hope Rose of the seventh-ranked Maryland field hockey squad (7-2, 1-1 B1G) was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week Tuesday for her first career weekly honor.
Rose (Dauphin, Pa.) scored three goals and notched an assist in the Terps' three wins in six days last week. At Indiana Friday, she led the Terrapins with two goals in their dominant 8-2 win. She scored the Terrapins' second goal when she brought the ball into the circle, shook her defender off and banged in a hard shot for the 2-1 lead. Just over a minute later, she assisted on the Terps' third goal, this time off a corner. She added her second goal in the second half when she took a pass from Emma DeBerdine and shot the ball into the bottom part of the cage.
In a dominant 4-0 win at American Sunday, Rose scored the Terrapins' first goal that opened the scoring 5:00 in. She took a pass from teammate Bibi Donraadt and finished it off for the score.
Rose has four goals on the year, which is second on the Maryland team. Donraadt leads the Terrapins with seven goals, followed by Rose and graduate student Julianna Tornetta with four. Thirteen Terps have found the goal line this season.
Maryland will host two top five opponents this weekend with No. 4 Northwestern (8-2, 1-1) Thursday at 6 p.m. and No. 1 Iowa (10-0, 2-0) Sunday at noon. Admission for both games is free. Parking is free in the lot directly next to the Complex after 4 p.m. Thursday and all day Sunday.
