Colton Spanger Added to Ray Guy Award Watch List

AUGUSTA, GA -- Maryland senior punter Colton Spangler was added to this year's Ray Guy Award Watch List, the Augusta Sports Council announced Tuesday.

The Ray Guy Award, named for football's premier punter, honors the nation's best collegiate punter. The Augusta Sports Council (ASC) presents the award live on The Home Depot College Football Awards broadcast on ESPN from Atlanta, Georgia.

Spangler is averaging 46.3 yards per punt this season (973 yards on 21 punts), the seventh-best average in the nation and second-best in the Big Ten, trailing only the FBS leader Michigan State's Bryce Baringer (52.0). Spangler has pinned eight punts inside the 20-yard line and booted seven over 50 yards. His 46.3 punting average would be the 11th-best single season mark in Big Ten history if the season ended today.

The Pasadena, MD native has three games this season of over a 50-yard average and four of over 45 yards per punt. Spangler now has a career punting average of 42.5, the third-highest in program history. Last season, Spangler tallied 45.5 yards per punt, the best single-season punting average in program history.

The Ray Guy Award winner is selected by a voting body of Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) sports information directors, national media and former Ray Guy Award winners. Punters are evaluated on their overall statistics and contribution to the team. Particular emphasis is placed on the following statistics; net average, percentage of total punts inside the 20-yard line and percentage of punts not returned.

Spangler and the Terps (4-2, 1-2 Big Ten) are back in action this week at Indiana. The game will kickoff at 3:30 p.m. and air on ESPN2.
