Terps Fall to Minnesota in Home Finale, 2-1

COLLEGE PARK, MD -- Maryland (2-8-5, 1-7-0) wrapped up its 2022 home schedule with a 2-1 loss against Minnesota (7-7-2, 3-4-1).

The Terps battled all day, achieving a number of athletic offensive breakaways and skillful defensive takeaways throughout the match, but came up just short. All three of the game's goals were scored in the first half.

This was the final home game for six-year veterans Malikae Dayes, Mikayla Dayes, and Alyssa Poarch. Poarch finished her Ludwig Field career with a bang, making an impressive, on-the-run score.

Coach Meghan Ryan Nezmer's Takes

"The girls fought. In the second half, I was hoping to get something for them, but we'll continue to work on what is going to build this program."

On Poarch and the Dayes sisters' last game: "We talked about Maryland legends, right? Those three are Maryland Legends. They fought through a lot. So I'm proud to say that I coached them and they were a big reason why I wanted to come to Maryland. But I think on and off the field they have so much Maryland pride. The next two games are about Maryland pride. Next two games are about making sure that we are inspiring the next generation; inspiring the youth to become like the Dayes sisters, to become like [Alyssa Poarch]. Those three hold a special place in my heart."

Player's Perspective

"I think scoring that goal today will give us a lot of momentum heading into the week against Purdue and Indiana," said Alyssa Poarch. "In my last game here, what I remember most is the memories with each team, for sure. I found myself getting close to different teammates every single year."

Breaking Down the Action
  • The game began with back-and-forth action between the Terps and the Golden Gophers. A shifty takeaway by Malikae Dayes initiated a string of Maryland possessions.
  • Minnesota's Sophia Romine made a tough goal in the 10th minute, bringing the score to 1-0.
  • Maryland equalized in the 28th minute with an athletic goal by Alyssa Poarch. Julie Lynch's on-target boot set up the sprinting Poarch's perfectly-placed score.
  • The Gophers' Gabbie Cesarone snuck one in during the final minute of the first half, sending the score to 2-1.
  • Goalkeeper Madeline Smith put her body on the line for a decisive block against a shot by Minnesota's Abi Frandsen in the 51st minute.
  • Maryland applied offensive pressure with speedy fast-breaks by Mikayla Dayes, Sofi Vinas, and Poarch.

Up Next
  • The Terps will play their penultimate match of the season at Indiana this Thursday at 7pm. That game will air on B1G+.
