GAME 8 STORYLINES

REWRITING THE RECORD BOOKS
  • QB Taulia Tagovailoa has established himself as one of the top quarterbacks in the country, especially in College Park. Tagovailoa has thrown for 3,642 yards in the 12 home games he's played for the Terrapins (303.5 yards per game). The only other Big Ten quarterback in the past 25 years to average more than 300.0 passing yards at home – with a minimum of 10 games -  was Purdue's Drew Brees (314.2) from 1997-2000.
  • The Ewa Beach, HI native is now second all-time in Maryland history in completions (574), passing yards (6,872) and touchdowns (46). Tagovailoa only stands 77 completions, 430 yards and four touchdowns from setting the program passing records in those categories. With a 300-yard game against Purdue (315 yards), Tagovailoa now stands alone at the top of the all-time 300-yard game ranks in Terrapin history with 11. He also is first all-time in career completion percentage (69.2) and passing efficiency (151.4).
  • Tagovailoa currently stands fourth in the nation with a 72.5 completion percentage, trailing only Michigan's J.J. McCarthy (77.1) and UCLA's Dorian Thompson-Robinson (74.8) and Marshall's Henry Colombi (73.2). His 69.1 career completion percentage is currently fourth among all active FBS quarterbacks, trailing only Mississippi State's Will Rogers (72.1), Ohio State's C.J. Stroud (71.5) and Coastal Carolina's Grayson McCall (71.0). He also stands top-20 among all FBS quarterbacks in career passing yards per game (240.4), completions per game (20.1) and passing efficiency (151.4).

defensive prowess
  • Over the past three weeks, Maryland has allowed the second-lowest amount of rushing yards in the FBS (James Madison), only letting Michigan State, Purdue and Indiana run for a combined 149 yards. Over the past two weeks, the Terps have only allowed 49 rushing yards total (13 vs. Purdue and 36 at Indiana), two of the three lowest totals by any Big Ten opponent since the Terps have joined the Big Ten
  • The Terps have only allowed 10 points in the third quarter this season, tied for the third-lowest amount in the FBS this season (Michigan: 6; Minnesota: 7). The Terps have outscored opponents 37-10 in the third quarter this season and held five-of-seven opponents (SMU & Indiana) scoreless.
  • The Terps have had 11 different players record at least one sack so far this season, tied for the third-most in the nation, only trailing Bowling Green (14) and Cincinnati (12). LB Jaishawn Barham leads the way with three sacks while DL Henry Chibueze, DL Greg China-Rose and LB Durell Nchami each have two and DL Tommy Akingbesote,, DL Anthony Booker Jr., DB Beau Brade, DL Quashon Fuller, DB Gavin Gibson, DL Taizse Johnson and DL Kellan Wyatt all have one.
  • LB Jaishawn Barham has 35 tackles through seven games this season, the fifth-most of any FBS freshman, only trailing FIU's Demetrius Hill (52),  Washington State's Jaden Hicks (44), South Carolina's Nick Emmanwori (37) and New Mexico State's A.J. Haulcy (37). Barham was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week after tallying five tackles (four solo), two sacks, two tackles for loss and a fumble recovery against Purdue (10/8), only the third Terp freshman in the last 12 years to have two-plus sacks in a game (Ruben Hyppolite vs. Penn State in 2020 & Andre Monroe vs. Wake Forest in 2011).

homecoming success
  • This will be Maryland's 100th homecoming game with the Terps having won 63-percent of its homecoming games all-time, a 60-35-4 record. The Terps have won five of their past six homecoming games, including two in a row, defeating Purdue in 2016, Indiana in 2017 and 2021, Rutgers in 2018 and Minnesota in 2020, while falling to Michigan in 2019. Northwestern will be the 30th different opponent Maryland will welcome on homecoming.

just for kicks
  • K Chad Ryland set the Big Ten record for most consecutive made field goals with a 43-yarder in the third quarter of the win against Michigan State. The senior tied Maryland's Brad Craddock (2013-14) and Ohio State's Mike Nugent (2001-02) as part of a streak which spanned 14 games between October 2, 2021 and October 1, 2022.
  • Ryland has made 22-straight field goals within 50 yards dating back to October 2, 2021, the longest streak of any Big Ten kicker. His 65 career field goals are the eighth-most of any active FBS kicker and the third-most in the Big Ten, only trailing Purdue's Mitchell Fineran (75) and Minnesota's Matthew Trickett (70).
  • At No. 4 Michigan (9/24), Ryland made a 52 and 53 yard field goal, the first Maryland kicker to have two 50-plus yard makes in a single game in program history and the first to record two field goals of 45-yards or more since Brad Craddock did so at Indiana on September 27, 2014. Ryland is also the first Big Ten kicker to accomplish this feat since Emmitt Carpenter of Minnesota had two in 2016 against Purdue (11/5).
  • Ryland hit a 51-yarder against Michigan State (10/1) to give him three 50-plus yard makes on the season, already tied for the most in program history (Nick Novak, 2002). The senior's 53-yarder at #4 Michigan was the fourth-longest in program history and his 52-yarder was tied for the fifth-longest in Terrapin lore. Through only five games this season Ryland has three-of-the-13 longest field goals in program history. Ryland has the most 50-plus yard makes in the country, tied with Missouri's Harrison Mevis.
