Terps Fall At No. 14 Penn State

UNIVERSITY PARK, PA The Terps suffered a 30-0 defeat at No. 14 Penn State on Saturday. Maryland is now 6-4 overall and 3-4 in the Big Ten while the Nittany Lions are 8-2 and 5-2 in conference play. 

Quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa threw for 74 yards on 11-of-22 to surpass the 7,000-career passing yards plateau as he now has 7,023. 

Roman Hemby ran for 68 yards to give him more than 1,000 total yards of offense this season.

On defense, Dante Trader Jr., led the Terps with a career-high 10 tackles. Beau Brade had seven stops and Ami Finau made six tackles. 

Breaking Down The Action
  • Penn State jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter on a 3-yard touchdown reception by Brenton Strange and a 45-yard rushing touchdown by Nicholas Singleton, which came on a 4th-down-and-1.
  • The Nittany Lions extended their lead to 21-0 as Singleton scored his second touchdown of the game – again on a 4th-and-1 run – on a 27-yard rush with 7:46 left in the second quarter. Jake Pinegar kicked 50 and 46-yard field goals in the final 1:34 left in the first half for a 27-0 score at intermission. 
  • Pinegar added his third field goal of the game with a 21-yarder for the second half scoring, making it 30-0.

  • Tagovailoa continues to stand second in career completions with 595, passing yards with 7,023, and passing touchdowns with 47. He only stands 56 completions, 279 yards and three touchdowns from setting the program passing records in those categories. He is already the career record holder in total offense, as he added to his leading total of 7,198 on Saturday. 

Hemby Goes Over 1,000 Total Yards
  • Running back Roman Hemby, who came into the game second among all freshmen in the country in yards from scrimmage, went over 1,000 total yards this season as he now has 1,054 after adding 68 yards at Penn State.
  • On the season, he has 815 rushing yards and 239 receiving yards. 

Third-Quarter Defense
  • Maryland held Penn State to three points in the third quarter and the Terps have now outscored opponents 54-16 in the third quarter through 10 games this season.
  • In allowing just 16 points in the third stanza this season, Maryland has allowed the second fewest points in the third quarter in the country all season. Only Michigan (9) has allowed fewer this season. 
  • Maryland has third-quarter shutouts in six of 10 third quarters this season.

  • Colton Spangler had two punts of more than 50 yards (53 and 59 yards) giving him 11 this season and 26 in his career. 
  • Glendon Miller had his first career fumble recovery, coming in the fourth quarter.
