ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa was presented the Louis L. Goldstein Gold Helmet Award as University of Maryland's most outstanding football player during the 67th annual Touchdown Club of Annapolis football awards banquet last night at the DoubleTree Hotel in Annapolis.
Tagovailoa elevated Maryland's passing game to heights it has never seen before during the 2021 season. The Ewa Beach, Hawaii native completed 328 of 474 passes for 3,860 yards and 26 touchdowns while setting seven single-season program records. He shattered the single-season school records for passing yards and completions while equaling the mark for touchdowns thrown.
"What a great honor for Taulia, who had one of the best statistical seasons of any quarterback that has ever worn a Terrapin uniform," said Maryland Head Coach Michael Locksley. "His numbers speak for themselves, but as a coach, I'm most proud of the way he developed as a leader. He has a tremendous work ethic and I think he'll continue to improve while also pushing his teammates to be great."
Tagovailoa became the first quarterback to start every game of a season for Maryland since C.J. Brown did so in 2014. He closed his sensational season by completing 20 of 24 passes for 265 yards and two touchdowns to lead Maryland to a 54-10 rout of Virginia Tech in the New Era Pinstripe Bowl. He was named Most Valuable Player of the game after directing an offense that compiled 481 total yards and scored the most points in the history of the Pinstripe Bowl.
Tagovailoa wasn't the only Terp to earn hardware at the banquet. Maryland signee Kellen Wyatt was presented with the Laramore Award, which is given to the areas high school lineman of the year.
Wyatt helped lead Archbishop Spalding to a 10-1 record and undefeated 5-0 MIAA slate in 2021. He was rated among the Top-25 players in the state of Maryland. Wyatt will join the Terps this summer.
