GAME 5Â STORYLINES
REWRITING THE RECORD BOOKS
- QB Taulia Tagovailoa has established himself as one of the top quarterbacks in the country, currently top-25 in the nation in completion percentage (74.6), passing efficiency (165.8) and passing yards (1,102).
-  Tagovailoa has thrown for 3,013 yards in the 10 home games he's played for the Terrapins (301.3 yards per game). The only other Big Ten quarterback in the past 25 years to average more than 300.0 passing yards at home – with a minimum of 10 games - was Purdue's Drew Brees (314.2) from 1997-2000.
- Â In his third season as a Terp, Tagovailoa stands first in program lore in career completion percentage (68.8%), second in career 300-yard passing games (9), third in career passing touchdowns (30), third in career completions (491) and fourth in career passing yards (5,973). Tagovailoa became the quickest Maryland quarterback ever to eclipse the 5,000 career yards mark in the season opener against Buffalo and is only 27 yards away from being the fastest to eclipse 6,000 yards.
barham beast
- LB Jaishawn Barham has 24 tackles through four games this season, the fifth-most of any FBS freshman, only trailing South Carolina's Nick Emmanwori (31), FIU's Demetrius Hill (28), Washington State's Jalen Hicks (25) and Nevada's Drue Watts (25).
- Barham totaled 12 tackles (seven solo) against SMU, the most by a Maryland true freshman since long-time NFL linebacker D'Qwell Jackson also had 12 (10 solo) on August 31, 2002 vs. Notre Dame.
going streaking
- RB Antwain Littleton II has scored a touchdown in five-straight games dating back to last year's New Era Pinstripe Bowl, the longest streak by a Terrapin since Keon Lattimore reached the end zone in the first five games of the 2007 season. If Littleton II scores this week against Michigan State, he'll have the longest streak by a Maryland RB since Lance Ball scored in six-straight games in 2005-06 (last three games of 2005 and first three games of 2006).
- The redshirt freshman's rushing touchdown streak is tied for the second-longest active streak in the country, only trailing Clemson's RB Will Shipley (seven). Littleton II is tied with Arkansas' KJ Jefferson and Toledo's Dequan Finn.
- Littleton II now has five rushing touchdowns in Maryland's first four games this season. Only two other Terrapins have done that in the last 15 seasons (since 2008) - C.J. Brown (6 in 2013) and Anthony McFarland Jr. (5 in 2019).
just for kicks
- K Chad Ryland has made 23-straight field goals dating back to October 2, 2021, the longest-active streak in the nation. Ryland is only 11 made field goals away from the longest streak in FBS history, which is 34, held by Wake Forest's Nick Sciba (2020-21). The senior is only one field goal make away from tying the Big Ten record of 24 consecutive field goal makes, held by Maryland's Brad Craddock (2013-14) and Ohio State's Mike Nugent (2001-02). Ryland has 10 more consecutive field goals made than the closest FBS kicker, Wyoming's John Hoyland (13).
- The Eastern Michigan transfer, who made 56-of-74 kicks as a Eagle, is five-for-five in 2022 to start his Terrapin career, one of only 19 kickers in the FBS that remains perfect this season with at least five field goals attempted, and one of only two in the Big Ten (Matthew Trickett, Minnesota).
- Â This past week at No. 4 Michigan, Ryland made a 52 and 53 yard field goal, the first Maryland kicker to have two 50-plus yard makes in a single game in program history and the first to record two field goals of 45-yards or more since Brad Craddock did so at Indiana on 09/27/14. Ryland is also the first Big Ten kicker to accomplish this feat since Emmitt Carpenter of Minnesota had two in 2016 against Purdue (11/5).
- Ryland's 53-yarder at No. 4 Michigan is the fourth-longest field goal in Maryland history, only trailing Brad Craddock's 57-yarder vs. Ohio State in 2014, Nick Novak's 54-yarder in 2003 and Steve Mike Mayer's 54-yarder in 1973.
high powered offense
- The Terps are currently ninth in the nation and third in the Big Ten, only trailing No. 3 Ohio State and No. 4 Michigan in yards per play, averaging 7.37. Maryland has 1,894 total yards (1,199 passing & 695 rushing) on 257 plays and has averaged at least 5.43 yards per play in each game this season. As an offense, Maryland currently ranks top-25 in the country in red zone offense (100%), completion percentage (74%), fourth down conversion percentage (85.7%), passing offense (299.8), and passing efficiency (167.5).
- Â RB Roman Hemby stands ninth in the nation in yards per carry, averaging 7.12 yards per rush through four games. Hemby has two runs over 50 yards (70 vs. Buffalo, 50 vs. SMU), tied for the second-most such runs in the country, only trailing Nicholas Singleton (Penn State).
- Â Maryland has scored at least 27 points in each of its last six games dating back to last season against Rutgers, their longest such streak since a run of six straight between the 2015 and 2016 seasons. If the Terps score 27 points against Michigan State, it will be the first time the Terps have done so in seven consecutive games since the 1984 season.
