CHATTANOOGA, TN -- Ethen Miller, Jaxon Smith and Braxton Brown all placed to cap off a successful 2023 Southern Scuffle, highlighted by fourth-place finishes for Miller and Smith. As a team, Maryland finished eighth out of 21 schools with 58.5 points.
Miller, Smith, Braxton Brown and Chase Mielnik all entered the day in contention for medals, with Smith the only one remaining in the Championship Bracket.
Smith lost an extremely hard-fought bout against Binghamton's Lou Deprez in the semifinals due to a riding point tiebreaker. He then responded with a win in the consolation semifinals to advance to the third-place match before medically forfeiting, resulting in a fourth-place finish.
Miller won two bouts by decision, racking up lots of riding time in both, to put himself in contention for third-place. He went up against Stanford's No. 17 Jaden Abas and battled hard, but couldn't find a takedown in the end, dropping a 3-2 decision to finish fourth at 149-pounds.
Brown won his first bout of the day to secure his spot in a medal match. After dropping a sudden victory decision to Oklahoma State's Caleb Smith, Brown took home seventh place due to his opponent's medical forfeit.
Mielnik, who impressively won three matches in a row after dropping his first one yesterday, was pinned in his bout, ending his successful run at the Scuffle.
