Terps Drop Road Match At No. 22 Ohio State

Box Score COLUMBUS, OH —The University of Maryland volleyball team (12-4, 2-2 B1G) battled in a couple of tightly-contested sets Sunday against No. 22 Ohio State, but could not overcome the Buckeyes in a 3-0 contest (23-25, 22-25, 12-25) Sunday afternoon at the Covelli Center in Columbus, OH. 

The match played out as a defensive slugfest, as both squads hit below .150. Maryland and Ohio State combined for 23 blocks in the contest, with the Buckeyes recording 15 to the Terps' eight. Redshirt senior middle blocker Anastasia Russ and freshman middle blocker Eva Rohrbach led the Terps with five and three denials, respectively.

Additionally, the Terps neutralized two-time AVCA All-American Emily Londot, who hit .091 with nine errors.

Maryland fought back in the first set, overcoming a 23-16 deficit to make it a one-point frame late, but Ohio State claimed the set. In a tightly-contested second set, the Terps responded to a four-point deficit late in the set to tie the frame at 21 apiece, but a late run put Ohio State up two sets to none.

Russ and sophomore outside hitter Laila Ivey each notched five kills for the Terps. 

How It Happened

Set 1: Ohio State 25 - Maryland 23
  • The Buckeyes opened on a 3-1 scoring run, but Maryland dropped three unanswered points to take a 4-3 edge with a Samantha Schnitta service ace.
  • Ohio State built a 11-6 advantage thanks to a 5-0 scoring streak capped by a Sarah Sue Morbitzer service ace.
  • Maryland fought back with a 4-1 run featuring a pair of kills and a block assist from Anastasia Russ, shortening the gap to 12-10.
  • The two sides traded 4-0 runs, ending with Maryland trailing 16-14 after a block assist from Schnitta and Eva Rohrbach.
  • Ohio State gained further separation with a late 7-2 stretch featuring a pair of Emily Londot service aces and two block assists.
  • The Terps battled to make it a competitive set, putting together a 6-0 streak to pull the set to 23-22.
  • Two of the final three points went the Buckeyes' way, as they clinched a hard-fought opening set.
  • Russ led the Terps' attack with four kills on six attempts.
  • Maryland racked up four total blocks in the frame, holding Ohio State to a .000 hitting percentage.

Set 2: Ohio State 25 - Maryland 12
  • The hosting Buckeyes took an early 6-3 edge, but a 5-1 stretch from the Terps put Maryland up 8-7.
  • Ohio State and Maryland traded two point swings as the score leveled at 11-11.
  • Four consecutive Buckeye kills put Ohio State in front, 15-11.
  • Maryland responded with a 3-0 streak powered by a pair of kills from Sam Csire, drawing the score line to 15-14.
  • With an Emily Londot kill and a block assist from Eloise Brandewie and Kamiah Gibson, Ohio State re-established its 19-15 advantage.
  • A 4-0 run from Maryland carried by kills from Csire, Anastasia Russ and Laila Ivey leveled the frame at 20 all.
  • The Buckeyes clinched the stanza with a 4-1 run with a block assist, a pair of Londot kills and a Sarah Sue Morbitzer service ace.
  • In the second set alone, the Terps accumulated 20 digs.

Set 3: Ohio State 25 - Maryland 12
  • After 10 points of battling back and forth, Ohio State pulled ahead with a 4-0 run, making it a 9-5 frame.
  • After Erin Morrissey recorded a kill, the Buckeyes strung together six consecutive points, putting Ohio State up 15-6.
