Tarheeb Still Named Thorpe Award National Defensive Back of the Week

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK -- Maryland senior defensive back Tarheeb Still was named this week's Thorpe Award National Defensive Back of the Week, it was announced Thursday.

Still led a Terps defense that allowed just 10 points and forced five Nebraska turnovers. The senior had a team-high seven tackles and two interceptions in the win. With the game tied and less than 4 minutes remaining, Still intercepted a Nebraska pass in the end-zone on third-and-goal and returned it 19 yards to set up Maryland's game-winning drive.

The senior is now tied for the Big Ten lead and ranks tied for second in the nation with five interceptions this season. The senior is one of only three players in the FBS to have two or more interceptions in multiple games in 2023. Still's five interceptions this season are the most by a Terp since Tre Watson in 2018 (also five). With one more interception, he'd have the most in a season by a Terp since Will Likely had six in 2014.

The first Jim Thorpe Award was presented in 1986, and is named after legendary athlete and Oklahoma Native, Jim Thorpe. It was conceived by former Oklahoma City talk show host, Ed Sossen, and former Jim Thorpe Association (now Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame) Executive Director, W. Lynne Draper, as a way to positively promote Oklahoma in a national light. The Paycom Jim Thorpe Award is universally accepted as one of the  nation's top collegiate sports honors, and is presented to individual athletes based on performance on the field, athletic ability and character.
