NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Maryland football program and the TransPerfect Music City Bowl is set to pay homage to the late Frank Wycheck, a former Terrapin tight end and Tennessee Titan legend, during Saturday's bowl game between Auburn and Maryland.
Wycheck, who played for the Terrapins from 1990 to 1992, left an indelible mark on Maryland football history. The bowl game will highlight those achievements, including holding the record for the most receptions by a tight end in school history with 134 receptions.
In addition to his accomplishments with as a Terp, the ceremony will also honor Wycheck's historic involvement in the "Music City Miracle" that unfolded on the very field where Saturday's bowl game will take place. Wycheck played a pivotal role in a moment in an AFC Wild Card playoff game between the Tennessee Titans and Buffalo Bills in 2000 that would become one of the greatest plays in NFL history.
"Frank Wycheck's legacy at Maryland extends beyond statistics; it embodies the spirit of our football program," said Damon Evans, Maryland's Barry P. Gossett Director of Athletics. "We are honored to join the TransPerfect Music City Bowl in remembering and celebrating the life of a Terps legend, especially on the same field where the 'Music City Miracle' occurred."
A video compilation of Wycheck's highlights by the Titans and University of Maryland will be played during the game. Furthermore, Maryland players will don helmet decals bearing his initials "FW" on gameday.
"Beyond the playing field, Frank Wycheck left an indelible mark on Nashville sports, becoming an influential figure in our local sports media scene after his retirement," Scott Ramsey, president & CEO of the TransPerfect Music City Bowl, said. "By honoring him during the bowl game, we aim to acknowledge and celebrate his legacy as a Terp, a Titan, and a beloved contributor to the Nashville sports community."
