HUMBLE, TEXAS - The Maryland women's golf team went 17 strokes under par at the ICON Invitational this week to set a new program-best 54-hole score. The Terrapins went 10 strokes under par in Monday's second round, which also tied a program single-round record.

Freshman Nicha Kanpai and junior Patricie Mackova both finished in a two-way tie for eighth in the event at the Golf Club of Houston this week. As a team, Maryland tied for sixth place of 16 teams. 

Kanpai, who entered this week as the 78th-ranked collegiate player in the country according to Golfstat, posted a career-low score of 208 (69-70-69), which was eight under par. This marked her fourth top-10 finish of the 2022-23 season. 

Mackova, who entered this week as the 60th-ranked collegiate player in the country according to Golfstat, also posted a score of 208 (70-66-72), which was eight under par, and also marked her fourth top-10 finish of the 2022-23 season. 

Both Kanpai's and Mackova's eight-under-par scores tied for second behind former Terp Virunpat Olankitkunchai's 11-under-par total (in relation to par) she shot at the FAU Invitational in February 2021, where she placed first for the event. 

Maryland, which is ranked No. 45 according to Golfstat, beat No. 28 SMU, No. 29 Texas Tech, No. 35 Tulsa, No. 37 Houston, No. 40 Tennessee, No. 43 NC State, and Big Ten foe Illinois. 

The Team
Senior Angela Garvin posted a new career-low and finished in an eight-way tie for 20th, posting 213 (74-70-69), which was three under. Her third-round score of 69 was also a career-best.

Senior Maria Vittoria Corbi finished in a six-way tie for 55th, posting 220 (75-72-73) (+4).

Sophomore Panassaya Somchit finished in a three-way tie for 61st, posting 221 (77-73-71) (+5).

Over the two-day tournament, Maryland played the par-72 Golf Club of Houston's - Tournament Course, designed by George Fazio. The tournament consisted of 54-holes of play (36-holes Monday and 18-holes Tuesday), with the field playing from 6,392 yards. The tournament was hosted by the University of Houston. The venue is home to the Cadence Bank Houston Open on the PGA Tour, which takes place in November.

"This weekend was the best performance in program history," said head coach Kelly Hovland. "To break the program scoring record in this strong of a field is an indication of how good this team is. Each player made significant contributions in each round and was relentless for the entire tournament. Making 55 birdies in 54 holes and leading the field in par-5 scoring is remarkable, and I am so proud of their preparation and execution!"
