Maryland Field Hockey Announces Staff Updates

COLLEGE PARK, MDMaryland field hockey head coach Missy Meharg has announced staff updates entering the 2023 season. Scott Tupper will now serve as the associate head coach, Kasey Tapman Asper enters her 5th coaching season as recruiting coordinator and Natalie Hunter Cyrus returns to her alma mater as the goalkeeper specialist.

"Scott has been an outstanding addition to Maryland. I am exceedingly proud to promote him to Associate Head Coach," said Meharg. "His new title includes Director of Player Development. Scott thrives on every player's fundamental hockey growth as it fits their hockey aspirations'. From the NCAA developing student-athlete to a potential Olympic and FIH world class player, Scott loves teaching."

"Scott Tupper is internationally recognized as a player, former Canadian senior national team captain and three-time Olympian," said Senior Associate AD Mark Sherburne. "He is an outstanding coach and technical teacher of the game who has made a significant impact on our Field Hockey program since joining the staff as an Assistant Coach in 2021. I am excited for Coach Tupper, the staff and the team as he transitions into his new role as Associate Head Coach."

Scott Tupper is entering his third season with the Terps in 2023 after joining the staff as an assistant coach in August 2021. Tupper, a three-time Olympian for Team Canada, came to College Park after serving as an assistant coach at Lafayette the previous year. In his two seasons with the Terps Tupper has been a critical factor in helping Maryland to a 34-11 overall record, the 2022 Big Ten Championship and two NCAA Final Four appearances.

"I'm extremely honored and grateful for the opportunity," said Tupper. "I would like to thank Missy and the University of Maryland for their belief in my coaching and their continued support and mentorship. I've loved my time here in College Park so far and feel that there is a bright future ahead of us. I'm lucky to come to work every day with an incredible group of colleagues and dedicated student-athletes, and I can't wait to get next season started."

Terrapin alumna Kasey Tapman Asper will enter her fifth season overall with the Terps in 2023 after joining the staff as a full-time assistant coach in 2021. A Pocomoke City, Maryland native Tapman Asper served as the Terrapins' volunteer assistant coach through the 2018 and 2019 seasons, helping to break down game film, working with the defensive penalty corner unit and assisting with travel and camps. Tapman Asper played for the Terrapins from 2011-15 and was a member of the Terps' 2011 NCAA Championship team and a team captain in her senior year.

A 2014 graduate of Maryland, Natalie Hunter Cyrus joins the Terrapin staff after serving as a U-16 Coach at Freedom HKY Club since 2017. Hunter Cyrus was both a Head Team Coach and Head Goalkeeper Coach during her five years with Freedom HKY. A Maryland field hockey alumna, Hunter Cyrus is a two-time NCAA National Champion, two-time ACC Champion and represented Team USA as a goalkeeper at both the Junior and Senior Women's National Team levels.

"Our staff challenges the players every day and vice versa," said Meharg. Together we are a powerful, talented and diverse group that's driven by the game.  We intend to provide a well-grounded player centered environment by surrounding ourselves with like-minded people that honor and dominate play with fundamental skills.
Playing fair, celebrating small wins and encouraging good laughter is critical inside our hockey SHELL"
