COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Maryland men's soccer head coach Sasho Cirovski announced the addition of freshman midfielder Leon Koehl to the program for the 2023 season. 

"Leon is a gifted central midfielder who is comfortable in possession and defending." Cirovski said. "He has been well schooled in the Bayer Leverkusen system and is an outstanding addition to our team right before the season. He will fit in well with our team culture and Terp Nation will enjoy watching him play at Ludwig Field this fall."

Koehl spent his youth career with Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen, recently appearing 27 times in U-19 Bundesliga West, playing 1,822 minutes and notching a goal and two assists. He also played eight times in the UEFA Youth League during the 2022-23 season. 

He also appeared in the matchday squad for Bayer Leverkusen in a late season Bundesliga match last season. During his youth career, Koehl also made 16 appearances in U-17 Bundesliga West, scoring one goal. 

No. 14 Maryland opens its season August 24 at Ludwig Field against Missouri State, who is receiving votes in the preseason United Soccer Coaches poll. Kickoff is scheduled for 8:30 p.m.
