Terps Claim Third Consecutive Sweep Over Le Moyne

Box Score FORT MYERS, FL —  The University of Maryland volleyball team (8-2) rolled in its opener at the Hilton Garden Inn FGCU Classic, defeating Le Moyne 3-0 (25-12, 25-9, 25-10) Friday afternoon at Alico Arena in Fort Myers, FL. The win marks the Terps' third sweep in a row and fourth consecutive overall triumph.

Maryland utilized its depth throughout to hit .443, marking the team's third outing of hitting a .400 or better clip in 2023. Senior outside hitter Erin Morrissey led the charge on the outside, recording a career-best nine kills in the starting role, while every Terp who made a swing recorded a positive hitting percentage.

Additionally, the Terps' defense stifled the Dolphin attack, permitting just a -.080 hitting percentage, the lowest opponent hitting percentage allowed since Maryland head coach Adam Hughes took the reins in 2018. Maryland's defense came as a result of its 11 team blocks while inducing more errors (22) than kills allowed (16).

Set 1: Maryland 25 - Le Moyne 12
  • Laila Ricks and Erin Morrissey opened the contest with a pair of kills as part of a set-opening 4-1 run.
  • After the Dolphins recorded a point, the Terps increased their lead to 9-2 on the back of three service aces from Erin Engel.
  • Ellie Watson hit a big swing off one foot to clinch the opening set for the Terps.
  • Maryland hit .556 in the frame with 17 kills.
  • In the set, Maryland had four scoring runs of at least three consecutive points.
  • Five Terps recorded multiple kills, as Morrissey, Watson and Ricks each contributed four kills.

Set 2: Maryland 25 - Le Moyne 9
  • Maryland and Le Moyne jostled for the lead through the first 10 points of the set, but the Terps established a big advantage on an 8-0 run buoyed by three kills from Anastasia Russ to take a 13-5 lead.
  • Three consecutive blocks from Russ kept the Terps rolling out to a 17-6 lead.
  • After the set was tied at 5-5, the Terps went on a 15-2 run.
  • In the set, Russ totaled four kills and four total blocks. 

Set 3: Maryland 25 - Le Moyne 10
  • After Le Moyne took a 4-3 edge, the Terps utilized a massive 12-0 run to secure a 15-4 lead.
  • Freshman defensive specialist Alex McGillivray buoyed the run with the three service aces of her collegiate career.
  • Erin Engel recorded the first two kills of her career.
  • Laila Ricks closed out the match with her fifth kill of the contest.
