Maryland Athletics Continues Standout Performances In The Classroom

COLLEGE PARK, MD - University of Maryland Athletics programs posted record marks in the classroom Fall 2023 semester. Maryland's student-athletes combined to record a 3.251 grade point average during the fall term, the seventh semester in a row with a GPA of better than 3.000. The strong academic performance marks the 15th consecutive semester with a better than 3.000 cumulative GPA. The overall cumulative department GPA is now 3.236. Seventeen of 20 teams above a 3.000 semester GPA and nineteen of twenty teams above a 3.000 cumulative GPA is an athletics department record. 

It was a standout semester as 40 student-athletes posted a perfect 4.000 GPA and 193 earned Dean's List recognition, boasting a 3.500 GPA or better. Overall, 389 student-athletes achieved Athletic Honor Roll status for posting a 3.000 or better GPA. 


2023 Fall Academic Success

"Once again, our Terrapins continue to star on and off the field as shown by stellar Fall semester filled with record performances," said Damon Evans, Barry P. Gossett Director of Athletics. "I am so proud of our student-athletes performing at such a high level in their academics. We continue to be inspired by their dedication to their studies while competing with their athletic programs. Our GSAC staff is to be celebrated as well for their commitment to education and fostering the consummate student experience. This is a time to celebrate our student-athletes, we are so proud of them."

"The academic achievements of our student-athletes this fall semester is remarkable", said Brady Rourke, Director, Gossett Student-Athlete Center. Our GSAC team noticed a competitive spirit early on in the term in which student-athletes were pushing each other to excel academically. Furthermore, our coaches recognize the value of a Maryland degree and hold student-athletes accountable for their education. GSAC tutorial services and learning support services provide comprehensive support to assist students in balancing athletics competition while earning impressive academic marks; as evidenced by high numbers of Dean's List and Honor Roll recipients. The overall cumulative department GPA of 3.236 is the highest ever recorded and reflects the all-embracing dedication to academic excellence. 

There were 17 programs posting a semester GPA of greater than 3.000 led by the women's lacrosse team with a 3.604 GPA. Nineteen programs have a cumulative GPA of greater than 3.000, with three posting better than a 3.500: women's lacrosse (3.576), gymnastics (3.571) and women's soccer (3.566).

Women's lacrosse had seven team members with a perfect 4.0, the most for any program, followed by six gymnastics student-athletes. Eight student-athletes in Graduate programs achieved a semester GPA above 3.000. 

The 51 student-athletes enrolled in Graduate Programs fall term earned an impressive average semester GPA of 3.537. 21 of the 51 Graduate Students earned their undergraduate degree from Maryland. 


Eleven programs had double-figure members of the Dean's List: women's soccer (22), women's lacrosse (21), gymnastics (16), women's track & field (15), men's lacrosse (13), cross country (12),  football (12), men's soccer (12), wrestling (11), softball (11), field hockey (10). Seventeen programs had at least 10 team members on the Honor Roll led by football (46), men's lacrosse (38), women's soccer (37), women's lacrosse (35), baseball (24), gymnastics (23), men's soccer (22) and wrestling (22). 

Maryland
celebrated 27 student-athlete graduates this fall and 83 student-athletes were named Fall Academic All-Big Ten selections.
