Griffith’s Game Winner Lifts First-Place No. 9 Terps To 3-2 Win
10/11/2024 10:00:00 PM | Men's Soccer
The Terps sit at first in the conference and have extended their unbeaten streak to 10 games. The last time Maryland was unbeaten through double-digit games was in 2017 when they started the season with a 13-game unbeaten run (10-0-3).
Griffith's score was his team-leading sixth of the season. All his goals have come in the last seven games, and he has four consecutive games with a score. The last Terp with a scoring streak as long as Griffith was Ben Bende, who scored in five straight games in 2021. Max Rogers earned the assist, giving the Yale transfer seven team-leading assists.
Washington took the lead early in the second half, as Cooper Brunell finished a deflected cross by Laurin Mack to make it a 2-1 scoreline. The lead was short-lived, as Griffith drew a penalty, and Leon Koehl slotted it away to tie the game at two. Koehl is now a perfect 5-5 on penalty kicks this season. This is the most since Mael Corboz had five in 2014. Like Koehl, Corboz was a perfect 5-5 on penalty kicks during the 2014 season.Colin Griffith puts the Terps 🆙 @MarylandMSoccer leads 3-2 💥#B1GMSoccer on @BigTenPlus 💻 pic.twitter.com/gvq2ByM2ln

The Terps answered Washington's opening score as Rogers finished off a pass from Luca Costabile to tie the match in the 16th minute. Rogers took the left-footed shot from just outside the penalty area, slotting the ball into the bottom right corner of the net. The goal was Rogers's second of the season and the first since Sept. 6 against Brown.
Mack tied his career high with five saves in the game, giving him 32 saves in 11 games played.
Coach Cirovski's Take
"Delighted with the performance of the team tonight. Their resilience, toughness, and willingness to find a way to get a result on the road against a very good Washington team. Twice we went down, twice we came back, and then we found the quality with the game-winner. This team is built of the right stuff. They have a warrior mentality. They love fighting for each other and I am very proud of them."
