No. 10 Terps Suffer 3-1 Loss At Rutgers

Box Score PISCATAWAY, N.J. –  No. 10 Maryland men's soccer lost to Rutgers 3-1 at Yurcak Field on Tuesday. It moved to 8-3-5 overall and 5-2-2 in conference action. 

Maryland is in third place in the Big Ten standings with 17 points, behind Indiana (23 points) and Ohio State (20 points), heading into its Sunday regular-season finale at Ludwig Field against No. 1 Ohio State. The Hoosiers clinched a share of the conference title with their win against Northwestern tonight. 

Matias De Jesus netted Maryland's lone goal in the 72nd minute. It was his second of the season and came off a rebound shot by William Kulvik that a Rutgers defender blocked. The Terps could not find the equalizer despite drawing opportunities late in the game. 

 
The match was tightly contested and physical on both ends, with a combined eight
 yellow cards. The Terps had advantages in shots (15-13) and corner kicks (10-3). Freshman goalkeeper Laurin Mack made three saves, bringing his season total to 40 saves. 

Rutgers improved to 5-9-2 on the season, and 2-6-1 in Big Ten play. Its goals occurred in the 44th, 62nd minutes and 87th minutes.

"It was a very disappointing result for the team tonight. It felt like from the beginning of the match, nothing seemed to break our way. It is time now for our team to reset and refocus as we prepare for the season finale on Sunday."

  • Jace Clark sent a header toward the net that missed right in the 23rd minute, giving the Terps an early scoring opportunity.
  • Late in the 44th minute, a foul within the box led to a penalty kick goal for Rutgers. It led 1-0 at the half.
  • Matias De Jesus had a near goal-tying opportunity that was blocked by a Rutgers player in the 53rd minute.
  • Colin Griffith put Maryland's second shot on goal in the 56th minute, which was saved low-centered by Rutgers's goalkeeper.
