Terps Fall To Bruins In Big Ten Quarterfinals

BRIDGEVIEW, IL – No. 3 seed Maryland men's soccer team lost to No. 6 seed UCLA, 6-0, in the Big Ten Tournament Quarterfinals at SeatGeek Stadium on Thursday. 

Maryland is now 8-5-5 overall and awaits its fate in the NCAA Tournament with the upcoming selection show, which takes place on Monday, Nov. 18.

The Bruins scored two goals in the first half and added four in the second half. The Terps were unable to respond, as many close-scoring opportunities didn't fall their way.  

UCLA improved to 7-4-6 overall and advanced to the Big Ten Tournament semifinals, where they will play No. 7 seed Michigan. 

The XI Breaking Down The Action
  • UCLA had its first shot opportunity of the game in the 10th minute, a shot from the top of the box that was wide left.
  • Maryland's first shot came in the 18th minute by Bjarne Thiesen, who missed high of the net.
  • The Bruins scored in the 33rd minute off a throw-in, putting a shot into the left side of the net.
  • UCLA added a second goal in the 44th minute with a cross to the box.
  • Sadem Maserka put a shot on goal that the Bruins goalkeeper saved in the 48th minute.
  • In the 51st minute, UCLA scored its third goal to lead 3-0.
  • Laurin Mack made a superb reaction save to prevent UCLA from adding its fourth goal in the 53rd minute.
  • A minute later, the Bruins scored their fourth goal of the evening.
  • Less than a minute later, Colin Griffith nearly responded for the Terps with a low left shot to the net that missed inches wide.
  • In the 65th minute, Jesus Matias shot a curling high-right ball that was saved, preventing a Maryland goal.
  • The Bruins expanded their lead to five in the 66th minute.
  • UCLA scored its final goal in the 75th minute.
