Terps Record 1-1 Draw In 2024 Season Opener At UMBC

BALTIMORE, MD – Maryland men's soccer recorded a hard-fought 1-1 draw in its 2024 season at Retriever Soccer Park on Aug. 22. 

Luke van Heukelum scored the game's first goal in the 84th minute to put Maryland ahead. The sophomore forward made a sliding finish on a pass from William Kulvik. However, UMBC responded two minutes later with a timely header goal by Joseph Picotto. 

  Graduate student midfielder Max Rogers led the charge with a team high three shots on goal in his first game in a Maryland uniform. Maryland's defense held strong, allowing just three shots on goal.

In his first collegiate start at goalkeeper, freshman Laurin Mack collected two saves, including his first career save in the 27th minute.

  • Max Rogers put Maryland's first three shots on goal in the 12th, 18th and 19th minute but UMBC goalkeeper Emigdio Lopez saved all three.

  • Mack made a crucial save in the 76th minute after UMBC got a spet on a defender.

  • The Retrievers responded with a goal on a header in the 86th minute to tie the game at 1-1.
