Terps Fall To No. 16 Georgetown In 2024 Season Home Opener, 2-0

COLLEGE PARK, MD – Maryland men's soccer (0-1-1) was defeated by No. 16 Georgetown (1-1-0) in its 2024 season home opener on Aug. 25 in front of an electric crowd of 4,462 fans.

The crowd was the largest since Ludwig Field housed 4,646 fans in a matchup against Wake Forest on Sept. 1, 2023.

Georgetown's Mitchell Baker scored the game's only goals in the second and 22nd minutes. The Terps were unable to connect on their three shots on goal. Luke van Heukelum, Colin Griffith, Leon Koehl and Kenny Quist-Therson led Maryland with two shots apiece.
Maryland freshman goalkeeper Laurin Mack made three saves. Through two games, he has collected five saves.

The XI Breaking Down The Action
  • Georgetown's Mitchell Baker struck first, scoring the opening goal in the second minute.
  • Maryland earned a corner kick opportunity in the sixth minute, which resulted in a high-centered shot by Jace Clark that the Hoyas goalie saved. Following the sequence was a shot by Luke van Heukelum that was stopped with a leaping save.
  • In the 16th minute, Leon Koehl attempted a shot that hit the top of the post, just missing the upper net.
  • Baker tallied another score in the 22nd minute to put the Hoyas ahead 2-0.
Cirovski's Take

"Going down in a hole was not an optimal way to start the game. We played good enough to get two or three goals today. At the end of the day we didn't score a goal and so we don't deserve to win the game. We have some things we need to improve on and we'll get better."

Numbers To Know
  • 1: Freshman Aidan Sheppela made their collegiate debuts.
