Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Smith’s Late Goal Leads Terps Past Navy, 1-0

ANNAPOLIS, MD – Kelsey Smith dribbled through a sea of Navy defenders and scored the go-ahead goal in the 73rd minute to lead Maryland women's soccer (2-1-2) to a 1-0 victory against Navy (3-3) at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility on Aug. 29.

The goal was the redshirt sophomore forward's second of the season. She scored her first against Stony Brook on Aug. 18.
Navy outshot Maryland 12-7. However, the Terps were more efficient with their opportunities, which was evident as both teams had two shots on goal.

Senior goalkeeper Liz Beardsley recorded her second shutout of the season and eighth as a Terp. She finished with two saves. Through five games this season, Beardsley has made 19 saves, leading the Big Ten Conference.
  Nemzer's Take
"We spoke about before the game that we needed to come together and be united," head coach Meghan Ryan Nemzer said. "So we came in halftime, we made some adjustments, and I was really proud with not only the players that came in, but also the game changers that really stuck to the game plan.

Smith On Her Game-Winning Goal
"When I went in, I knew that it was still 0-0, and there was a good opportunity for me to take it, and I'm glad that it went in."

  • In the 39th minute, Peyton Bernard headed an entry ball that sailed left of the goalkeeper, almost reaching the back of the net.
  • Off a goalie kick in the 58th minute, Navy set up a cross inside the box that went off the foot of their attacker and rolled just past the low left corner out of play.
