COLLEGE PARK, MD - The University of Maryland athletics department and the M Club proudly announced the selection of eight exceptional Terrapins selected for induction into the University of Maryland Athletics Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2024.
"Congratulations to our remarkable Hall of Fame Class of 2024," said Damon Evans, Barry P. Gossett Director of Athletics. "This is a tremendous class of Hall of Famers, including Terps who were National Players of the Year in their respective sports and others who became the first to achieve an accomplishment in their sport. Each of these Terps has made an undeniable impact on Maryland Athletics both on and off the field. We're looking forward to celebrating this outstanding class and recognizing their academic and athletic achievements."
Autumn Welsh Kelly of Maryland Field Hockey will be the 18th member of the historic field hockey program to be inducted into the Maryland Athletics Hall of Fame. Autumn Welsh Kelly won the prestigious Honda Award in 2001, recognizing her as the top female athlete in her sport nationwide. She was the first-ever Terrapin Field Hockey student-athlete to receive this award and only the second athlete in school history. Welsh Kelly was also a key member of the 1999 NCAA Championship team. In 1999, the Terps claimed the school's third national field hockey title and the second under Hall of Fame Head Coach Missy Meharg. The Terps went 24-1 on the year and were undefeated in ACC play. Maryland would also earn the program's third ACC conference championship.
During her career at Maryland, Autumn Welsh Kelly made four NCAA tournament appearances and reached the Final Four three times. She was a two-time All-American, earning first-team honors in 2001 and second-team honors in 2000. A four-time All-Regional selection, Welsh Kelly was named the 2001 ACC Player of the Year and received All-ACC honors three times from 1991 to 2001. As a dominant defender, she played a crucial role in helping the Terps achieve 39 shutouts over her four-year career.
"She is so well deserving. Autumn was one of the fiercest defenders I have ever worked with. Her ability to get to a ball before the opposition was unmatched," explained Head Coach Missy Meharg. "Her ability to lead through her central back position was brilliant. She loved the game and came from a great pedigree. She is a remarkable woman and an incredible leader."
Founded in 1982 by the M Club and developed as a collaborative effort with the Athletics Department, the Maryland Athletics Hall of Fame pays tribute to those superior Terrapin athletes, coaches and administrators who have made major contributions to the honor and fame of the University of Maryland and have continued to demonstrate the positive values learned through competing in intercollegiate sports. Induction into the Hall of Fame represents the highest athletic honor the University can bestow.
The Hall of Fame induction ceremony will be held on Friday, October 18, 2024 at the College Park Marriott Hotel & Conference Center. The reception will begin at 5:30 p.m. with the dinner to follow at 6:30 p.m. For ticket information, please call the M Club office at 301-314-6394 or visit here.
