
Terps Defeat Hoosiers, 1-0, Advance To 2-0 In Conference Play

BLOOMINGTON, IN – Maryland men's soccer defeated Indiana, 1-0, in a suspended game that started on Friday night and was finished on Saturday morning at Bill Armstrong Stadium. Following a 3-0 win over then-No. 8 Wisconsin, Maryland (4-1-3, 2-0 Big Ten) posted a shutout against its second consecutive conference opponent.
Sophomore midfielder Leon Koehl got the Terps on the board first with a penalty kick goal in the 40th minute. The score was his team-leading third of the season. All of his goals have come on penalty kicks, and he's 3-of-3 from the spot. Koehl also leads the Big Ten Conference with his three penalty kick goals.
Freshman goalkeeper Laurin Mack made a career-high five saves. Through seven games, he has 20 saves. The shutout was the second of his career, doing so in back-to-back conference games.
The last time a Terp goalkeeper posted back-to-back blank sheets in conference play was Niklas Neumann in 2021, who issued shutouts against Indiana on Oct. 31 and Northwestern on Nov. 7. The last Terp overall to record shutouts in back-to-back games was in 2022. Jamie Lowell accomplished the feat against Ohio State on Sept. 25 and Old Dominion on Sept. 30.
Maryland's defensive unit of Luca Costabile, William Kulvik, Bjarne Thiesen and Alex Nitzl held Indiana's offense in check. The Hoosiers were unable to net any of their 15 shot attempts.
Indiana is now 2-3-3 overall and 1-1 in Big Ten Play. The game was started on Friday night but play was suspended at 69:40 with 20:20 left in the game due to lightning in the area. It resumed on Saturday morning at 10 a.m.

- Laurin Mack made an easy first save on a header that dropped right into his hands in the fifth minute.
- Maryland's first shot attempt by Colin Griffith occurred in the 19th minute but was blocked.
- Mack made a diving stop in the 27th minute off a high-centering shot.
- The Terps rattled off three shots within a minute in the 36th and 37th-minute frame. Aidan Sheppela and Griffith's shots were saved, and Matias De Jesus missed high.
- Leon Koehl connected on a penalty kick in the 40th minute to give the Terps a 1-0 lead.
- Albi Ndrenika sent a shot at the Indiana goalkeeper from long range, but he made a diving stop.
- Mack made an incredible save in the 67th minute to keep Indiana scoreless. The ball nearly squeaked past him, but he made the save while falling to the ground and extending his arms.
- Sadam Masereka nearly extended Maryland's lead with a fast break goal, but the Indiana goalkeeper made the save.
- De Jesus put up a bicycle kick while still on the ground in the 70th minute, but the save was made.
- A few minutes after play resumed, Indiana's shot by Tommy Mihalic was blocked.
- Two shots in the 83rd and 84th minute by Masereka and Max Rogers couldn't find the net. Masereka's shot was blocked and Rogers' shot was wide.
