Maryland Drops 42-28 Decision At Indiana

BLOOMINGTON, IN – Maryland was defeated by Indiana, 42-28, on Sept. 28 at Memorial Stadium. Maryland (3-2, 0-2 Big Ten) and Indiana (5-0, 2-0 Big Ten) went back and forth, trading scores throughout the game. Both teams were deadlocked three separate times (7-7, 14-14, 21-21), but the Hoosiers pulled ahead by two scores early in the fourth and never surrendered their lead.

Billy Edwards Jr. found Kaden Prather for a 30-yard touchdown midway through the fourth to cut the lead to 35-27, but after review, the score was overturned. The Terps subsequently turned the ball over on downs, and the Hoosiers closed out the game despite a late score by Roman Hemby.

Edwards completed 26 of 41 passes (63%) for 289 yards and three touchdowns. Prather was his favorite target, hauling in five receptions on nine targets for 66 yards and a first-half score. It was Prather's eighth touchdown in a Maryland uniform and his third of the 2024 season. The senior wide receiver now has a touchdown in three consecutive games.

Dylan Wade caught the other score from Edwards, making an acrobatic diving catch on a tipped ball for the fourth touchdown of his career. Tai Felton caught five passes for 38 yards.

Hemby rushed 10 times for a season-high of 117 yards. Midway through the third quarter, he ripped off a one-play 75-yard touchdown to tie the game at 21 apiece. The score was his 19th career touchdown on the ground, ranking him tied for 10th on Maryland's all-time rushing touchdown list. It was also the longest run for the Terps this season. Hemby added five catches for 48 yards through the air.

Maryland's defense thwarted Indiana's offense in the first half, forcing three takeaways. Jalen Huskey and Glendon Miller grabbed their team-leading third interceptions of the season. Huskey's interception was the first thrown by Kurtis Rourke in an Indiana uniform. Both takeaways marked the fourth time the Terps picked off multiple passes in the last five games.

Michael Harris forced a fumble that Lavain Scruggs recovered. Kellan Wyatt, Trey Reddick, Caleb Wheatland and Quashon Fuller each recorded sacks. Fuller's was a strip sack late in the fourth. Harris posted a career-high 10 tackles and added a second-half fumble recovery.

Maryland has faced an undefeated team in each of its first five games of the 2024 season. The Hoosiers advanced to 5-0 and 2-0 in conference play.

Coach Locksley's Take

"We won the turnover battle, but lost the game," Head Coach Michael Locksley said. "So to me, that shows that there are other areas for us. The first thing that jumps out to me is scheme-wise, are we doing the things that help our young online? Are we doing the things that help our corner? And then we got to just keep looking at the personnel and making sure that we're giving these guys the opportunity to compete. We'll get better. I know that we'll get better."

Hemby On His Long Touchdown Run

"The offensive line did a great job on that run, just getting vertical as fast as I can. KP came in and dug out the safety so it made my read a little bit easier, and I was just able to use my speed. ... We just stayed consistent with [the run] and we were able to have a little bit of success, but we're going to keep working to make it more successful down the stretch."
