4 Downs: Maryland Football By The Numbers - Week 5

Each week, umterps.com reviews the numbers and notes from Maryland football. Roman Hemby's dominant outing, Billy Edwards Jr.'s continued brilliance, the Terps dominating turnover margin and a look ahead to the team's matchup against Northwestern coming off a bye highlight this week's reading.
First Down: Roman's Empire
  • Roman Hemby rushed 10 times for a season-high 117 yards and a touchdown. He added five receptions for 48 yards and a touchdown through the air.
  • Both of his scores occurred in the second half. Midway through the third quarter, he ripped off a one-play 75-yard touchdown to tie the game at 21 apiece. The run was the longest play for the Terps this season. His touchdown catch was midway through the fourth to chip at the deficit.
  • This marked the fifth multi-touchdown game of Hemby's career and his first with both a receiving and rushing touchdown in the same game.
  • The rushing score was his 19th career touchdown on the ground, tying him for 10th on Maryland's all-time rushing touchdowns list. He's tied with Brandon Ross (2012-15), Keon Lattimore (2004-07) and Buddy Rodgers (1994-97).
  • Hemby is tied for 11th on the scrimmage touchdowns list with 22. He's tied with Rodgers and Ed Modzelewski (1949-51).
  • Hemby eclipsed the 2000-yard mark in the game. He has 2,058 rushing yards, placing him 14th on Maryland's all-time rushing leaderboard.
  • The running back has gone over 100 yards rushing for the seventh time in his career and the first time this season.
Second Down: Billy Ball Brilliance
  • Billy Edwards Jr. passed for 289 yards and three touchdowns against Indiana. It was his first career game with three passing touchdowns.
  • Through five games, Edwards has completed 128-of-177 passes (72.3%) for 1,444 yards and 11 touchdowns. He also has two rushing touchdowns.
  • Edwards leads the Big Ten in completions and passing yards while ranking tied for first in the league in passing touchdowns with Illinois' Luke Altmyer and Indiana's Kurtis Rourke.
  • Nationally, he ranks fourth in completions, eighth in completion percentage and 10th in yards.
  • According to Pro Football Focus, Edwards was the sixth-highest graded QB in the FBS and the second-highest graded in the Big Ten entering the contest. He was graded at 90.3 (min 100 dropbacks).
Third Down: Dominating The Turnover Margin
  • The Terps' turnover margin is +11 this season, ranking first nationally.
  • Maryland won the turnover battle 4-0 against Indiana, thanks to interceptions by Jalen Huskey and Glendon Miller and fumble recoveries by Lavain Scruggs and Michael Harris
  • Huskey and Miller lead the Terps with three interceptions apiece this season. Both defensive backs intercepted a career-best four passes in 2023.
  • Overall, the Terps have eight interceptions this season, ranking sixth in the nation and tied for first in the Big Ten with Minnesota. The other INTs have come from Dante Trader Jr. and Ruben Hyppolite II
  • Maryland has recovered six fumbles, ranking second in the nation and first in the Big Ten. In addition to Scruggs' and Harris' recoveries, Quashon Fuller, Donnell Brown, Ricardo Cooper Jr., and Caleb Wheatland have recovered fumbles this season.
  • The Terps have only committed three turnovers on offense this season and have won the turnover battle in four of their five games. In three of the games, they haven't committed a single turnover.
Fourth Down: Friday Night Lights | Northwestern At Home
  • The Terps have a bye week but will play Northwestern at SECU Stadium on Friday, Oct. 11.
  • The Terps and Wildcats have only met four times in school history, and Northwestern holds a 3-1 series lead.
  • The school's last matchup was last season in Evanston, Illinois. Northwestern edged Maryland, 33-27, in a game down to the wire. Tai Felton and Roman Hemby caught touchdown passes in the game. Kellan Wyatt recorded five total tackles and a tackle for loss on defense.
  • The Terps' lone win in the series was in 2022 in College Park. Billy Edwards Jr. made his first-career start and threw for 166 yards on 18-of-28 passing and a touchdown while rushing for 66 yards.
  • Hemby rushed for a career-high 179 yards and three touchdowns in that game. His three rushing TDs were the most by a Terp since Javon Leake had three rushing TDs vs. Illinois in 2018. His rushing total was also the most by a Terp since Jake Funk had 180 vs. Rutgers in 2020.
  • Hemby's third score came on the first play after Northwestern tied the game at 24-24. He broke off a career-long 75-yard touchdown run with 3:22 left to play to put the Terps ahead.
