
Terrapins Defeat BYU to Close Out ITA Kickoff Weekend

AUSTIN, TX -- The University of Maryland women's tennis team defeated BYU 4-2 on Saturday, the match was the Terps second and final match of the ITA Kickoff Weekend.
"We're very happy with how the team bounced back today with the win over a good BYU team, we started much quicker in doubles today and focused on being the more aggressive team," said Head Coach Katie Dougherty. "Oliwia did a great job getting the clinch for us and bouncing back from the tough 1st set, great response from the whole team today after losing to a very good Texas team yesterday."
Maryland opened up doubles play with Kallista Liu and Ema Kovacevic taking the No. 1 doubles match 6-2. BYU responded by taking the No. 2 doubles match 6-3.
With the doubles point on the line, Tamari Gagoshidze and Katherine Hung came back from a 4-2 deficit to take the No. 3 doubles match 7-5, giving the Terps a 1-0 lead.
Gagoshidze followed up her doubles win by earning the Terrapins second point of the day, winning the No. 5 singles match 6-1, 6-3. Fighting off three set points in the second set, Diya Challa pushed the Terps ahead 3-0, winning the No. 6 singles match 6-2, 7-5.
BYU then cut Maryland's lead to 3-2, taking the No. 2 and No. 3 singles matches.
Oliwia Orlinska slammed the door shut on BYU's comeback bid, taking the No. 4 singles match to clinch the 4-2 win for Maryland.
