No. 7 Wisconsin Takes Down Terps in Three Sets

The high-ranked Badgers used six aces to defeat Maryland on Sunday.


COLLEGE PARK, MD — 
The No. 7 Wisconsin (12-2, 5-1 Big Ten) stormed into the Schanwald Pavilion with an impressive start to the season under its belt. The Badgers and Terps (7-9, 0-6 Big Ten) fought for three sets, but Wisconsin emerged with its 12th win of the season.

Ajack Malual recorded 10 kills and an ace while Addie Canady tallied a pair of aces, but the Badgers used a trio of set wins (25-20, 25-19, 25-12) to capture a Sunday win. 

How it Happened:
1st Set:
  • The teams traded a pair of service errors to start the day. 
  • An ace from Malual put the Terps ahead 4-1.
  • The Terps took a 7-4 lead. 
  • A kill from Haley Melby put Maryland up 11-7.
  • A Wisconsin ace evened the set at 13-13.
  • A 6-1 run put the Badgers ahead 16-14.
  • A 4-0 Wisconsin run put the Badgers ahead 21-17.
  • Malual's fourth kill gave the Terps their 20th point of the frame. 
  • The Badgers won the first set 25-20.
2nd Set:
  • Maryland opened a 3-0 start to the set. 
  • A kill from Melby put Maryland up 6-2.
  • Blocks from Duru Gokcen and Lilly Wagner put Maryland up 9-4.
  • Another kill from Melby gave UMD a 13-9.
  • A 6-0 Badgers run put them ahead 16-14 in the set. 
  • Wisconsin pulled away to take a 22-18 set lead.
  • The Badgers won the second set by a score of 25-19.
3rd Set:
  • Wisconsin used a pair of aces to open a 9-2 lead.
  • A strand of Maryland errors led to a 17-7 Badger advantage. 
  • Maryland used a pair of kills to get to its eighth and ninth points of the set.
  • The two squads traded service errors to reach a 21-11 mark.
  • Wisconsin ended the match with a 25-12 set win.
