10/19/2025 1:00:00 PM | Field Hockey
A pair of goals in the third quarter helped the Wildcats keep their unbeaten Big Ten campaign alive.
COLLEGE PARK, MD — Maryland fought the top-ranked Northwestern Wildcats for 60 full minutes on Sunday, but the No. 1 Wildcats (13-1, 5-0 Big Ten) proved why they are a force in collegiate field hockey this season, flexing a 2-1 win over No. 10 Maryland. (8-6, 4-3 Big Ten).
The Terps started fast, scoring in the sixth minute on Djuna Eikelboom's first-career goal. Maryland stormed out of the gate on Sunday, outshooting the top-ranked team in the nation 6-0 in the opening quarter.
Northwestern landed the equalizer in the 34th minute on the first shot of the second half. Maddie Zimmer scored on a penalty corner for her fourth goal of the season as the top-ranked team in the nation tied things up at the Plex.
The Wildcats scored again minutes later on a penalty stroke. Alyssa Klebasko made the initial save, but chaos in front of the net let Maja Zivojnovic sink her third goal of the season to take a 2-1 lead.
While shots and scoring chances were plentiful for both sides, the Wildcats kept their undefeated conference season alive, but a rematch in the Big Ten or NCAA Tournament between Northwestern and the Terps seems incredibly likely.
