No. 22 USC Defeats Maryland In Three Sets

The Terps fell to the Trojans on Thursday night.

LOS ANGELES, CA — The Terps lost a rough road match against the No. 22 Trojans late Thursday night in three sets (25-12. 25-14, 25-18). Each set was closer than its predecessor, but USC continued its trend of success on its home court, downing Maryland in a conference match.

USC stormed out of the gate on its home court, snagging a 25-12 first set win. The second set largely resembled the first as the Trojans used a collection of runs to earn a 25-14 win and move a set away from victory. 

Ajack Malual and Olivia Ruy both collected a team-high five kills. Jonna Spohn picked up a pair of aces and five digs on the night.  The Terps had a couple early leads in the final set, but the Trojans finished off the sweep with a 25-18 set win to improve to 9-2 at home in 2025.  How it Happened:
Set 1:
  • Gökçen's first kill of the night gave the Terps their first point.
  • A USC ace put the Trojans ahead 4-2.
  • A Malual kill cut the USC lead to 10-5.
  • Spohn's first ace gave the Terps their seventh point of the set.
  • USC used a 6-1 run to open a 19-9 lead. 
  • A kill from Rohrbach gave Maryland its 10th point of the set. 
  • USC finished the opening frame on a 5-1 run. 
  • The Trojans took the first set 25-12.
Set 2:
  • USC started the second set on a 8-2 run as Maryland called a timeout.
  • Katie Scherer picked up a pair of kills as the Terps kept themselves in the match.
  • A kill from Sydney Bryant brought UMD within five, 12-7.
  • A 4-0 run from the Trojans put them ahead 16-7.
  • An Ally Williams ace gave the Terps their 12th point. 
  • USC took the second set 25-14.
Set 3:
  • Ruy evened the set at 1-1 with a kill.
  • Another Spohn ace put Maryland ahead 4-3.
  • A kill from Haley Melby brought Maryland within a point, 8-7.
  • A Ruy kill evened the set at 8-8.
  • USC pulled ahead with a 9-2 run.
  • Kills from Ruy and Gökçen gave the Terps their 13th and 14th points.
  • A Melby kill made it 23-16 in favor of the Trojans.
  • USC finished the night with a 25-18 set win.
