No. 25 UCLA Sweeps Maryland In Late Match On the West Coast

The Terps fell in three sets to the ranked Bruins despite 11 kills from Ajack Malual.

LOS ANGELES, CA — The No. 25 UCLA Bruins (12-8, 6-4 Big Ten) swept the Terps in California late on Saturday night (25-15, 25-22, 25-20). A few Terps (8-12, 1-9 Big Ten) added to their impressive season totals, but UCLA defended its home court for its 12th win of the season. 

The Bruins used four aces in the first set to open the night with a 25-15 set win. Ajack Malual tallied six of her 11 total kills in the initial frame as she moved her season total to 275, the fifth-highest mark in the conference.  After facing several deficits, Maryland rallied in the second frame, but UCLA held off the Terps to take the set 25-22. Duru Gökçen continued her remarkable defensive season, adding three blocks to her conference-leading season total of 97 in 2025. In all, the Terps tallied six blocks on Saturday night.  UCLA capped off the night with a 25-20 set win to improve to 6-4 in conference play. The Terps have another ranked opponent on the horizon as the No. 21 Hoosiers roll into College Park on Halloween. 

How it Happened:
Set 1:
  • The Bruins used a pair of aces to storm out to a 6-0 lead.
  • Maryland responded with a 3-0 run that featured an Ally Williams ace. 
  • A UCLA ace put the Bruins ahead 15-8.
  • Malual's fifth kill of the set gave the Terps their 11th point.
  • UCLA's fourth ace of the set gave the Bruins a 20-13 advantage. 
  • The Bruins won the first set 25-15.
Set 2:
  • UCLA rolled out to a 7-3 lead. 
  • The Terps used a timeout as the Bruins claimed a 10-5 lead.
  • An Olivia Ruy kill cut the UCLA lead to 11-7.
  • The Terps used a trio of Bruin service errors to hang around in the set, collecting their eighth, ninth and 10th points of the frame on UCLA miscues.
  • Eva Rohrbach, Malual and Lilly Wagner collected consecutive kills on a 3-0 run to cut the UCLA lead to 16-13. 
  • More kills from Ruy and Malual cut the Bruins' lead to 21-19.
  • An Addie Canady ace brought the Terps within a point.
  • Two UCLA errors evened the set at 22-22. 
  • The Bruins used a 3-0 lead to earn a 25-22 set win.
Set 3:
  • A Rohrbach kill gave the Terps their first point of the set. 
  • A 4-1 Maryland run put the Terps ahead 5-3.
  • Malual's 11th kill of the night put UMD up 8-6.
  • Four straight kills from UCLA put the Bruins back in front 10-8.
  • A kill from Rohrbach gave the Terps their 10th point of the set. 
  • UCLA pulled ahead to take a 20-13 lead. 
  • A Malual ace made it 21-16 in favor of UCLA.
  • The Bruins won the final set 25-20.
Numbers to Know:
  • 32: Malual picked up an ace against the Bruins to bump her season total to 32, which is tied for the second-highest mark in the conference. 
  • 97: Gökçen tallied three blocks against UCLA, moving her conference-leading season total to 97.
  • 275: Malual added 11 kills to her season total, moving the mark to 275, which is good for fifth in the Big Ten.
