The Terps fell to the Scarlet Knights in their first match of the weekend.

PISCATAWAY, NJ — Maryland (7-6, 0-3 Big Ten) fell on the road to Rutgers (10-5, 1-2 Big Ten) in four sets on Friday night.

An impressive rally from Rutgers in the opening set earned the Scarlet Knights a 27-25 set victory, but Maryland responded in the second set, creating a 18-9 lead and holding it for a 25-17 match-evening set win.

Rutgers won a pivotal third set 25-20 and used its momentum to take the final frame 25-16 to seal its first conference win of the season.

Ajack Malual led the team with 14 kills, Duru Gökçen tallied five total blocks, and the Terps recorded six aces in the Friday night loss.

How it Happened:
1st Set:

Maryland stormed out to an 8-0 lead that featured an ace from Lilly Wagner, a pair of kills from Gökçen and forced Rutgers to take an early timeout.
A kill from Malual put Maryland ahead 10-1.
The Terps used a string of Rutgers errors to open a 14-4 lead.
Rutgers used a 5-1 run to cut Maryland's lead to 18-9.
A kill from Maulal gave the Terps a 20-14 lead.
An ace from Rutgers amidst a 4-0 run cut Maryland's lead to 20-18.
Another 3-0 run by the Scarlet Knights evened the set at 20-20.
A pair of service errors from Rutgers put Maryland back ahead 22-21.
Rutgers evened the set back up at 24-24.
Rutgers won the first set 27-25.

2nd Set:

A kill from Gökçen opened the set with a 1-0 Terps lead.
An ace from Ally Williams put UMD ahead 4-3.
A 5-0 run from Maryland featured kills from Eva Rohrbach and Wagner and put the Terps up 10-6.
Olivia Ruy's second kill put UMD ahead 13-8.
A 7-1 Terps run saw them take a 18-9 lead.
Rutgers responded with a 5-1 run to crawl back within five.
A kill from Rohrbach put the Terps up 20-14.
An ace by Melby gave UMD a 23-17 lead.
A kill by Ruy clinched the 25-17 set win for Maryland.

3rd Set:

Wagner's second kill cut the Rutgers lead to 5-4.
The Scarlet Knights' hot start saw them open an 11-6 advantage.
An ace from Malual cut Rutgers' lead to 16-11.
Rutgers continued to surge ahead to a 22-13 lead.
A squad of Terps contributed kills in a 6-1 run to come back within four.
Rutgers took the third set 25-20.

4th Set:

Rutgers sprung out to an 8-4 lead.
Jonna Spohn's second ace of the match brought the Terps back to a 13-10 deficit.
Rutgers powered forward to an 18-12 lead.
Rutgers won the final set 25-16 to win the match.
