No. 9 Purdue Defeats Maryland In Three Sets

The Terps fell on the road on Friday night to a talented Boilermakers squad.

WEST LAFAYETTE, IN — The Terps ran into a tough Purdue opponent on Friday night and the No. 9 Boilermakers (22-3, 13-2 Big Ten) dealt Maryland (8-17, 1-14) a three-set loss (25-19, 25-17, 25-18) despite 11 kills from Ajack Malual. Jonna Spohn tallied a pair of aces while Eva Rohrbach added six kills to her season total. Lilly Wagner eclipsed the 700-assist mark of the season with 23 on Friday night.  Duru Gökçen's been amongst the Big Ten's leaders in blocks all season and she added three more to her season total against the Boilermakers. Maryland will stay in Indiana to take on the No. 18 Hoosiers and avenge a loss from Oct. 31.

How it Happened:
Set 1:
  • A Haley Melby kill got the night's scoring started.
  • Rohrbach earned her first kill to even the set at 3-3.
  • Maryland used a 5-1 run to take a 10-9 lead as Maual, Gökçen and Bryant tallied kills.
  • A Spohn ace gave the Terps their 12th point of the set. 
  • Two kills from Maual cut Purdue's lead to 20-18.
  • The Boilermakers pulled away late for a 25-19 set win.
Set 2:
  • Purdue opened an 8-3 lead.
  • Melby picked up a kill amidst a 6-1 Boilermaker run.
  • Malual added two kills and Addie Canady recorded an ace during a 5-1 Terps run,
  • Spohn tallied her second ace of the night midway through the set. 
  • A Rohrbach kill gave the Terps their 15th point of the set. 
  • Purdue took the second set 25-17.
Set 3:
  • Purdue snagged consecutive aces during a 7-1 run to start the set. 
  • Rohrbach earned her fifth kill early in the set. 
  • Malual added two more kills late in the night. 
  • Wagner grabbed an ace late.
  • Purdue won the final set 25-18.
Numbers to Know:
  • 110: Rohrbach sits sixth in the Big Ten with 110 blocks on the season.
  • 117: Gökçen's 117 blocks in 2025 are tied for the third-most in the conference. 
  • 332: Malual's 332 season kills are the sixth-most in the Big Ten.
  • 707: Wagner tallied 23 assists on Friday to surpass the 700-assist mark and bring her season total to 707.
