No. 18 Indiana Beats Maryland In Three Sets

Maryland fought with one of the nation's top teams for three sets on Sunday afternoon.

BLOOMINGTON, IN — Maryland fell to No. 18 Indiana (21-5, 12-4 Big Ten) on the road on Sunday afternoon in three sets (25-23, 25-22, 25-14) despite two razor-thin sets early in the match.  Ajack Malual continued to lead the Terps (8-18, 1-15 Big Ten) through the season, posting 13 kills and four digs. Haley Melby also added nine kills to her season total in the loss.  Duru Gökçen had a big day at the net, tallying three blocks to boost her season total to 120 — which is tied for the fourth-highest mark in the Big Ten. Lilly Wagner also impressed up front with 32 assists and 11 digs on Sunday while Eva Rohrbach tallied seven kills and a block.  How it Happened:
1st Set:
  • A Malual kill got the day started.
  • Melby, Malual and Rohrbach added kills as Maryland opened a 4-3 lead. 
  • Gökçen's first kill of the day put Maryland ahead 7-5.
  • A pair of IU errors evened the set at 12-12. 
  • The Hoosiers pulled ahead with a 6-2 run.
  • Malual's sixth kill of the set brought Maryland within two. 
  • A Rohrbach kill cut IU's lead to 22-21 late. 
  • Sydney Bryant kept the set going with a kill.
  • Indiana took the first set 25-23.
2nd Set:
  • A Jonna Spohn ace helped Maryland open a 3-0 lead. 
  • The Hoosiers used a 5-0 run to claim the lead. 
  • Maryland evened the set at 9-9 with a 3-0 run.
  • A Gökçen kill gave Maryland its 10th point of the set. 
  • A kill from Melby evened the set at 11-11.
  • A Melby ace gave Maryland its 15th point of the set. 
  • A huge Malual kill evened the set at 21-21
  • The Hoosiers snagged a 25-22 set win. 
3rd Set:
  • Malual, Melby and Wagner collected early kills.
  • Kills from Gökçen, Melby and Malual evened the set at 8-8 in a 3-0 run.
  • An Indiana ace gave the Hoosiers a 14-10 lead. 
  • Indiana pulled away late with a 10-1 run.
  • The Hoosiers took the final set 25-14.
